1 month ago - Early in the 17th century, the first form of our modern exponential notation was introduced by Renรฉ Descartes in his text titled La Gรฉomรฉtrie; there, the notation is introduced in Book I. I designate ... aa, or a2 in multiplying a by itself; and a3 in multiplying it once more again by a, and thus to infinity. ... Some mathematicians (such as Descartes) used exponents only for powers greater than two, preferring to represent squares as repeated multiplication.

r/learnmath on Reddit: What is the definition of an exponent?
June 28, 2022 -

Hello everyone! I was wondering what the formal definition of an exponent is. Iโ€™ve made it through calc 2 and up until now the only detention Iโ€™ve received is either an is a multiplied by itself n times or given am/n would be the nth root of am, for example sqrt(a) is a1/2. However I was wondering if there is a more formal definition. For example, 2pi can be computed, but wouldnโ€™t work with the above definitions, as you canโ€™t multiply 2 pi times and pi is an irrational number.

Any insight on this would be much appreciated!
