Nest is a kitchen-sink type framework. It has a lot of tools that you don't always need and a lot of opinions about how things should be done. If your project requirements deviate at all from what is documented in basic use cases you can actually be worse off then using a lightweight framework like express and bringing in the pieces you need. I want to learn backend with JavaScript and NodeJs. I came upon two frameworks. Express and NestJs. Seems like NestJs uses Express (and Fastify) under the hood. But I have a history with Java and Spring. And NestJs is similar to Spring.

Now my question is, as a begginner to JavaScript backend development, Should I learn Express or NestJs at the start?

Neither. Fastify. It's a modern express.js alternative staying true to node.js philosophy. NestJS is nice, but it has bigger overhead than Fastify/Express for simple use cases.

Nestjs with typescript is the new big boy on the block. If you are new, start with express and then move to nestjs.

I'm starting with back-end and I don't know what framework to choose. First I was going to use Python but then I changed my mind. I am choosing between two frameworks, NestJs and ExpressJS.

If you decide to go for Express due to simplicity compared to Nest, consider Fastify for a modern alternative to Express https://fastify.dev . I used Express for years and loved the DX when I switched to Fastify

Literally every post in this thread deserves to be down voted because they either don't understand what nest.js is nor do they care. Nest is just another framework on top of either express.js (by default) or fastify that gives you a more biased developer experience and some shiny extra tools and where typescript is a first class citizen and very much Angular-like. Should you use nest or just work with purely express? As with all things: it depends. I'm a friend of opinionated frameworks, so I would at least suggest to take a look at nest.js in its default configuration with express.

May 25, 2023 - A JavaScript expert will take express because they can do it well, quickly, and maintain it just fine. Someone working for an enterprise with a large team of developers of all skill levels will go with NestJS because it offers a good pattern, linting, typescript, unit testing, etc that keeps a framework maintainable by a large team and upgrade able over time.

If you don't know enough to make this decision, you probably shouldn't be the one making the decision. I don't mean that in a harsh way, but if you're working for a startup, I'd imagine there's someone with more experience making that call?

The point of startup is to move as quick as possible. You're choosing between outdated and boilerplative-enterprisey. You should be looking for tools that will help you to move faster with your specific tasks.

Hi everyone, i'm a young Junior Developer and i have some questions for getting a job as a backend node developer. When i appliying to a job as backend node developer, i should be an expert in Express.js, Nest.js or both? I've seen a lot of jobs that are asking about Express specific, but I've seen too little for Backend Node Developer using Nest.js. I'm currently know pretty much about Nest.js, I domain things like REST, Websocket, GraphQL, Databases like MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch , and PostgreSQL, Autentication with jwt http only cookie or OAuth, ORM like TypeORM, Prisma and Moongose, Authorization using CASL, CSRF middleware, Local File Storage, SQL lenguage and a little more. I work already in a company in my country as a Fullstack Typescript Developer using Nest.js and Next.js, but I'm trying to get a better job in the international scope. I know too little about Express (I know how it work but never used it), because in the pass i make a jump from Node to Nest.js. Learning Express will increase my probabilitys of getting a job as a Backend Node Developer? And what should I learn next? I have been thinking about microservices. Sorry for my bad english btw.

These kinds of discussions are fruitless. Express is basic but robust. Nest is a full framework. You know which one is better? The ones that matches the project requirements. Let's say you're hired to work on a project with 50 journalists that have been working with Wordpress for years and already know and love a docen of plugins. Would you change Wordpress for a custom development based on Express? Of course not. Then is Wordpress better than any Node framework. No. Unless the project requires it. Same thing for every framework/library.

As a young junior dev you will not be an expert on anything. Play around with different technology and be open to new things at this point.

NestJS and express aren't competing with each other, they are solving different problems. By default, under the hood NestJS is actually using express, though you can switch to fastity. NestJS provides an opinionated application framework. They provide wrapper modules around a lot of common packages like redis, kafka, and grpc. In particular the framework encourages writing code that is easy to test. When working on a team, having everyone following the same patterns is very helpful. Express is a framework for defining the webserver behavior. It is flexible and does not impose much structure on the user. If your application needs to do something else, express will neither help you nor hinder you.

It's an opinionated framework built on top of express / fastify . Adheres to pop and MVC principles. Closely mirrors angular on the front end

For a Fullstack, I already have Js, Tailwind, Html, css, React, now I want to get into Back, but I don't know if NestJs or Express with Mysql and some NoSql.

The problem is that I never got into Typescript, I did some things with Express years ago that I don't remember.

So getting straight into trying to build something with NestJs, is proving to be a pain because I don't understand anything despite having a solid foundation in Front.

NestJs has a lot of ‘magic’ and abstraction. Learning express first will help you understand more fundamentals

Hello guys,
I want to start coding in backend with NodeJS but I checked out existing NodeJS frameworks and I found two ones that are quite popular now (it is important for me, as I know with a framework that is widely used, I will have resources to improve easily)
But I want to make a choice between Nest JS and Express and I would like to have your feedback if you have already used one or both.

NestJS is much easier to pickup if you have an Angular background. It also brings forth many concepts, like dependency injection, from mature back end frameworks like Dotnet. That being said, if you are a pure NodeJS developer, you may find NestJS ceremony gets in your way. But if you are coming from a Spring Boot or ASP.NET background, you will feel more comfortable. It also depends on how you plan to deploy the application. If you can package it in a docker container, it doesn’t matter as much. But if you need to use, for example, AWS Lambda with something like Serverless framework, you need to consider how that will affect the structure of the application. Express may be more suited to something like AWS Lambda. All that being said, NestJS is a great framework with a great community.

Nest is an abstraction over Express so uses it under the hood by default. If you’re new it’s worth learning express first because it will help understand what Nest is doing for you later, express is also really simple so there’s less to learn to get off the ground

Neither. Start with Spring Boot, Django or ASP.NET if that is your goal. Nest.js is a sensitive topic. Some people in the JS world despise it, some swear by it. I think it's badly designed, but structurally it's similar to Spring or ASP.NET. Don't know about Django. Express.js is a minimalistic router only. It's used by Nest.js by default. Either way, it doesn't make sense to learn one of those as a stepping stone to a different framework and a different language.

NestJS does feel a lot like Spring Boot, but as the other poster said, start with what you plan to use in the longrun. The "controversy" with Nestjs is pretty straightforward. Because it's modelled after Spring Boot, many of its features exist for the wrong reason - to circumvent challenges and limitations of the Java (and also more generally, any strictly typed) language. For example, standardized and encapsulated Dependency Injection as a pattern is controversial in node.js anyway when you have all the tools you need to mock dependencies. Spring Boot's implementation (mimicked by Nestjs) was already controversial because it broke a lot of DI best practices - specifically, all the "automatic injection" done under the hood is considered an antipattern in DI in general. But the goal was never strict philosophical DI, but circumvention of problems with testing. Similarly, the "standard" of using creating type classes for everything. In most javascript frameworks, it's WEIRD because we have typescript and we have functional validators/parsers. But you don't have that type flexibility in Java (ad-hoc typing that just works), so everything needs an interface there... which structure isn't really feasible to mimic with interfaces in javascript and so they use classes. All-in-all, NestJS works and provides some decent structure and patterns for a large scale app. The cost is that it uses a laundry list of features that provide at best marginal value in javascript and makes it hard (if not impossible) to use other features and patterns that are more javascript-native (I mean, just try using effect.js. Or just have fun with all the extra code and sometimes redundancy if you aren't using class-validator+typeORM. Even plugging in swagger leads to things getting "weird")

And what are you trying to achieve? Nest would be good to learn in any case as you will learn to work with dependency injection and it's a great node backend in general. I am not a fan of learning something just for the sake of learning it tho, as I don't think the experience will stick if you are not invested in it with a project or something like that

I have worked with ExpressJS projects and NestJS Project, and found the opinionated nestjs to be easier to work with, with ExpressJS different developers exist with its own set of their own 'best practices' and it is always different from project to project. Although for learning sake, having experience in express makes it easier to transition to NestJS, since its just a wrapper.

I think a large company should go with NestJS ?

I don't think there's a solution for all "enterprise environment". It's the project mostly backend? Does it have a frontend at all? It's mostly frontend? All the api's are developed by the same company or are there third party services? Are there some other not-so-common technologies that will be part of the project? Let's say your company has 12 programmers familiar with Express and none familiar with Nest. Even if Nest is overall better (that it isn't) is not the best option. How easy is to build a team of Nest experts?

We started with express however we grew really fast and had to quickly migrate to NestJS.

NestJS is Express with a bunch of configuration added, unless you opt to make it Fastify with a bunch of configuration added. Take a look at Nest’s docs and see if it works for you. A lot of people like the extra guidance it provides. I don’t (it’s a lot different than most JS libraries in its conventions, and I find the indirection in adding libraries to be frustrating) but it’s really something to decide for yourself. Personally, I use fastify.

NestJS shines for large MVC style semi-monolithic apps. if you like that sort of thing, it’s great. But horizontal scale and microservices or just SOA is becoming more standard as cloud functions and small-container deployments become easier to deploy and manage. For those apps, I prefer fastify, express, or a lightweight framework on top of those like Feathers (designed for small independent services)

The performance is also pretty bad compared to other solutions · For microframeworks, koa and fastify are good choices. NestJS is a TypeScript bolt-on to ExpressJS. Do you want to use vanilla JS or TypeScript? Your answer should be TypeScript, as it's better for too many reasons, but you can still do what you need to with ExpressJS. Most of us in the Node.js world start with Express and move into something better.

I found Nestjs a bit too much verbose & clunky for my taste… if you come from Angular world you might like it is what I am told… I like Fastify very much… I don’t use express any longer…

NestJS is not better than express per se. NestJS is a framework that forces you to make your backend in a certain way while Express lets you decide almost everything. If you and your team are experts in express and already use Hexagonal arch and SOLID principles, you don't need to force a change to NestJS. I would recoment NestJS for new teams that don't have an architecture yet, and want a framework that guides them in the best practices to make a backend app.

If you know express just use express. If you don't know why you need NestJS you probably don't need it.

Whichever pays. I like express, for money I can like nest. No harm in taking a short course on any framework or tool you don't know but seems to get mentioned a lot.

I would personally prefer NestJS unless it was a very simple backend then express. I think Nest's structure sits well with my mental model and I can tease apart the business domain into separate independent services that the Nest framework can inject as singletons helps my productivity. So my workflow goes something like: I need to handle checkouts, so I'd `nest g module checkout` to create the checkout module Realize it needs to talk to the order, shipping module - so I'll import those modules as into the checkouts module. Write the business logic for checkouts in the checkout (module's) service using any of the services from other imported modules. Expose the endpoint for checkouts in the checkout (module's) controller. There's a bunch of boilerplate with nest though but I just generate it using the CLI. I like that Nest enforces a clear spearation of concerns and modules are by default singletons - you would only always have only one instance of, say, the database class that is shared across all other services that need the database access. Compared againt Express and its "anything goes anywhere" approach which, grants you a lot more freedom, makes you think about mutliple things. Maybe that's just me though.
