I live in a pretty tight space in Philadelphia and currently have a 48" round dining table. I love the table, but it's not suited to board gaming (which I do a lot of!). I'm hoping to find an expandable dining table that meets these criteria:
Attractive both extended and not.
Stable/good construction.
Seats 4 people when not extended. No upper limit.
Flexible on price.
It's been surprisingly hard to find this! I like the Ekedalen from Ikea, but my partner has a hard "no more Ikea furniture" rule. Does anyone know of other attractive extendable dining table options? I'd really appreciate any insights.

Ok so i’ve seen that a lot of extendable ones either look very awkward or are less sturdy when you pull them out. Plus space also becomes an issue in smaller apartments so something compact like a drop leaf style table. I’d probs advice to look for something with a steel frame and adjustable feet cuz that would help with the stability. I’m also gonna throw in this recc here which looks decent in terms of size and set up, i’m not saying it’s the one but it’s worth checking out. Pro tip: Use lighter wood finishes or glass tops cuz that’s gonna help make your space feel less cramped visually, idk if that’s something you care about.

We have a small space and a small family, most of the time would not need more than 4 top table. Would like to be able to expand to 6-8 about once every couple of months and then to 10-12 about twice a year. I saw the Transformer Table at Costco which seems like exactly what we need but saw reviews that the quality isn't that great.
The major thing for us is in needs to start small (4 seater in a square or circle format)--everything I've seen starts as a 6 seater rectangular shape. Would also be open to finding a table that goes from 4 to 8 and just accepting that we'll have to pull out a folding table.
LOCATION: USA, Washington DC region
BUDGET: $2-4k (would love less expensive but shrug not expecting miracles)
SIZE: 4 seater, expands to 10 or more with leaves
STYLE: Open to anything as long as it extends! Prefer more minimal and modern but not scared away by other styles.
I've looked at the Transformer Table and have been scared off by some negative reviews. I've seen extendable tables that start at 6 seater and go up but I'm really looking for something that at it's smallest is a 4 seater square or circle to maximize our everyday layout.

I am looking for the exact same thing!! I'd settle for one that maxes out at 8 people. They are SO hard to find, I've scoured the internet and local antique/used furniture places with no luck. I've also decided against the Transformer Table (although every time I get frustrated about not being able to find what I want I revisit it, only to be re-convinced that I don't want it). I want a lifetime table, and my impression is that these are not durable. If they were made out of good, solid wood they would cost 2-3x as much. The only one I've found that fits the bill is this one from West Elm: https://www.westelm.com/products/anderson-expandable-dining-table-h2545/ Please update with any others you find! I'm located in the Twin Cities, MN.

Have you looked at the brand Resource Furniture? They have a table called the Elegance that transforms from a circular 4 seater to an oval that comfortably seats 8 (so you could probably squeeze in 10) with two leaves. They also have one called Goliath that goes from a console table against the wall to a twelve seater! Definitely higher end and higher price, however

My partner and I just downsized into a small home and we’re trying to make the most of our limited dining space. We eat at the table daily just the two of us, but host 4–6 people once or twice a month. We’re looking for a compact extendable dining table that doesn’t wobble when fully opened. It should also look good and isn’t a pain to expand. Wood or similar aesthetic preferred. Any recommendations or things to watch out for when buying one? Also, where should we look first? Thanks!
update: took a look at some on FB marketplace but nothing caught my partner's eye. Went and ordered one extendable dining table from Castlery as suggested by my partner. thanks everyone

The mid century modern tables designed for wartime homes sell for affordable prices (~$250-300) in fb market place if you’re down to refinish it. You can but refinished or in great condition as well but it’s a bit more rare And costs about $500-750 in my area.
