Are there any good USB microphones I can get?
I get the jump from headset mics. You can check this one out. Honestly, the biggest thing for me was just not having something clamped on my head anymore. You don't realize how much that pressure adds up during longer sessions until it's gone. And hearing yourself sound like an actual person instead of talking through a tin can is weirdly satisfying. It's one of those changes where you can't really go back once you experience the difference. Plus, it's simple with no setup confusion. More on reddit.com

External microphone?
Logitechs new webcams have ok audio for zoom calls. Most USB microphones will work fine but some are better than others depending on your environment. Using a condensor type microphone like the Audio Technica At2020, or Blue Yeti/Snowball will make you sound more natural - but will suffer in environments with lots of background noises like keystrokes, computer fans, etc. In those situations a Dynamic microphone is ideal as they don't pick up sound as well, these types are the ones you see at live shows mostly, a drawback with dynamic microphones is that you need to be close to the microphone, like right on top of it and just a few inches away and it will sound like you are across the room. I have little experience with USB dynamic microphone so can't recommend any other than Rode Podcaster which is a USB version of their procaster. It's hard to say "this is best" as it depends on how far away you are from the microphone and where you are using it. USB vs "real" microphone? For your use case a USB microphone is the most convenient as they often feature a mute switch and headphone jack on the microphone it self and are more affordable than a interface + xlr mic combo. In need of a microphone to use instead of my laptops built-in microphone
Audio engineer of 20 years and full time youtuber here. For the love of god, do not buy a Yeti It’s the worst, overpriced, completely inappropriate piece of garbage that’s somehow cemented itself as “the best choice for YouTubers/streamers. “ Condenser mics like the Yeti are incredibly sensitive, and make for wonderful vocal mics…in a $5000 acoustically treated vocal booth. Are you in one of those? Probably not. Using a condenser mic in the average room results in a noisy, echo-y mess of a sound, picking up everything from your computer’s fan to the neighbor’s dog. Get any USB audio interface (I recommend Behringer, or a Scarlett Solo if you can afford it) and a Shure SM48 (or SM58 if you can afford it). The SM48 and 58 are dynamic microphones, built with a heavy magnetic coil that’s less susceptible to distant noise. There’s a reason radio stations only use dynamic mics. They sound f***ing great on spoken voices. Don’t buy a yeti. More on reddit.com

What’s the difference between a gaming microphone and a regular microphone?
Gaming microphones tend to be optimized for real-time performance and are often easy to use since they’re designed to be used while you game. Additionally, gaming microphones often deliver real-time voice monitoring capabilities, noise cancellation features, and gaming console compatibility. While regular microphones may also be used for gaming, they usually aren’t engineered with gamers in mind, and might not deliver that crisp audio that takes communication to the next level.

r/microphone on Reddit: Are there any good USB microphones I can get?
June 11, 2025 -
For context I have my own pc that a friend built for me on a budget a while ago and I use it for gaming mostly. I’ve only ever had microphones connected to my headphones but I want a microphone that will have a good clear mic quality.
I don’t know if I would know how to use microphones that are Bluetooth or anything other than USB. I would like it to be small and somewhat budget but I’m flexible on budget.
I hear the name blue yeti a lot but idk how it works (is it usb or something else)
I’m not a big tech guy so I don’t know a lot and would appreciate help on picking a good mic. I have an Amazon gift card so mics on amazon are preferred but not limited to that.
