I went to local stores that sell brand name rugs to get a feel. There were definitely some brands I didn’t like the feel/price of and others I did. Take photos of anything you like because you can use google lens to reverse search it and find it on discount sites like wayfair (they often use fake brand names so it doesn’t dilute the brand’s image). My wool ones I just bought online because I wanted thick, dense ones and so that was easier to tell online and those turned out great. I agree $400 for that size is gonna be a huge stretch for wool though, you’d have to get lucky with a good sale. Also a rug pad is key to making it comfortable to sit on. I went with some rug padding from Home Depot and it’s amazing. It makes some of my rugs almost feel bouncy. Even under thick rugs it’s a noticeable difference. If it helps I got good prices on two of my rugs at bed, bath, and beyond. They always have additional coupons too, but it’s hit or miss if they’ll work on rugs. Also you might be surprised to find local stores with good deals. TJ Maxx/Home Sense but also just local to you places. Several times they beat out online prices for me. Overwhelmed looking for a large living room rug that is comfortable enough to sit on. Wool vs. polypropylene - how do you know if polypropylene will be high quality/comfy? Any tips or recommendations?

Long living room - need rug advice!
IMO the couches and the lines on the rug are making the room longer. I’d try playing with furniture placement a bit more…. It’s ok to have two v distinct areas in a large room. Try an L configuration for the couches with potentially the long low bookcase along the back of the couch. 🤷‍♀️ More on reddit.com

I know there are several similar posts on this sub and others across Reddit and I am pretty sure I have read them all, haha. Unfortunately, I am still so confused as far as what to look for and I am hoping to get some advice or hear some experiences from others!

I want a large rug (~9x12 or 8x10) for my living room that is cozy and comfortable enough to sit on. I am not expecting a 9x12 ft cushion lol, just something cozy and inviting! No kids, just one cat.

I understand that wool is thought of as the best option, but I've also seen the argument that a quality, high-density polypropylene rug may be a better choice for someone not ready to invest in an heirloom rug. This is my first place I'm decorating as my own and not on a college student budget so I am happy to pay more than the minimum but not feeling super keen to go upwards of $400, which I know is limiting ;(

How do I know if a polypropylene rug is high quality?! Especially looking online, half the time they look fine in the picture but rumpled and thin in reviews and I def want something comfier than that seems. Not really interested in a kilim.

Also, how much of a difference does the rug pad make? I have seen varying opinions from "it's just there to keep the rug from moving" to "invest in the plushest one available"

TIA :)

Rugs that big are not super cheap, even in synthetic, because of production and shipping costs (a 9x12 rug might weigh upwards of 50 lbs, and the machines that make them are not small). You could consider two or three smaller ones depending on your layout. You can get affordable wool rugs from IKEA, or cotton for even less. Polyprop is okay but it is stiff, doesn't feel that nice. its virtues are being cheap and tolerating "high traffic" - shoes, pets, hard usage. I prefer jute and sisal rugs (those brown rough feeling ones) for high traffic, but comfy they're not. Acrylic might suit you as a compromise, I've seen some quite soft acrylic rugs. Those "recycled sari" rag rugs are affordable and can look nice, but they're hard to wash - this may not be a problem if you have a "no shoes" policy in your home and the rugs don't get dirty very fast. A silk rug is way out of the question, obviously - too delicate AND expensive. if you want it to be comfy and your floor is not carpeted, definitely get a rug pad. I wouldn't get "the plushest available" unless you have joint problems and really need something extra soft - the softer it is, the thicker it is, and too thick becomes a tripping hazard. Just get a medium one. Secondhand rugs are not always a bad deal, if you buy locally and make sure to touch and smell the rug before purchase and maybe get it professionally cleaned before it comes inside.
