How to break into an entry-level Social Media job without a Bachelors degree
I'd start a social media project on your own. Work that to build a portfolio. A part of social media marketing and content creation that I believe is not quite understood (based on my last 15 interviews with video editors) is creativity and storytelling. Out of those 15 video editors I have interviewed for a social media content creation position, very few could show me their creativity or even were willing to simply chat about the topic. They all seemingly had the technical skills to cut up a video and wanted me to storyboard it for them. Part of what we are hiring for is taking an idea and being able to storyboard it and edit the inspirational talk with some b-roll. I found 1 person, who we are probably going to hire p/t, that could even talk about this process. Not sure where you are financially but event hitting up places and asking for a short-term internship. This could help lead to a job or at least let you see if you want to do it. Also, PORTFOLIO! Holy shit, the amount of people who claim to be a professional that can't come up with content showing their success is mindblowing. This is social media with so much trackable data and links to EVERYTHING! Anyways, start grinding away on a personal project to be able to show your skills. Even if you don't have a ton of followers, being able to link to your projects will be key for someone who doesn't have a degree to back it up. I hope this helps. More on reddit.com

r/marketing on Reddit: How to break into an entry-level Social Media job without a Bachelors degree
October 9, 2020 -

Hi! I have an associate of arts with the majority of my classes focused on Accounting. My work history has also been coordinator-level but in the finance industry. However, I want to break into a Social Media role (even at a very entry-level) to pivot my career. Due to Covid, finances, and my desire to get the ball rolling- I don't want to wait another 2+ years to start this. Right now my resume is obviously very finance focused, and I have tried to massage it to sound more "communications" savvy, but I am clearly lacking SM experience.

Is there an affordable certification course, or a free one that is actually worth it?

I am interested in taking: Google Analytics (free), Twitter Flight Program (free), Facebook Blueprint ($150 for the cert), and getting a free month of LinkedIn Premium so I can take some LI Learning courses in SEO or SM Fundemantals.

I have also been playing around with Lightroom to get some content creation experience. Thinking about finding small, local companies and creating some free content for them just to have some sort of portfolio and if they share it on their platform even better.

Pls no depressing "not gonna happen" answers. I am aware its a long-shot but ya gotta have hope or this year is just too damn depressing. I feel that even without a degree, with some hustle there's always a way to make something happen. At least get my foot in the door while I figure out going back to school in 20201.

Thank you in advance! Any input appreciated!!! xoxo

I’m a social media manager with no degree, I just love social media and know how it all works. Start your own SMM company, get a website, get your own social media platforms looking sharp and go for it. I’ve never had to use paid ads to get clients I just post free tips and tricks on my IG and go live on FB once a week and clients come to me. Good luck!
