My company used to cut the “bottom 5%” every year and each team always cut people. They used to switch up managers quite often too. If you’re a new manager who doesn’t know your team and have nobody rated below “meeting expectations”, what does a lazy manager do? Meh, they just pick one. We lost some really good people that way. Facebook-parent Meta planning more layoffs, to impact thousands: Report
They have hired a ridiculous number of people over the last 6-7 yrs. I was surprised when i first heard about the 11k layoffs in December as i remember Facebook having < 20k employees in total. It looks like they went from a headcount of 17k to 90k between 2017 and 2022! No wonder they are now wiping out thousands.I wouldn't be too surprised if there are more rounds of culling after this. Sad that the rank and file will have to pay for the follies of the generals. More on reddit.com

Mass layoffs in tech spread to Meta, corporate parent of Facebook
Have they considered that maybe instead of some systemic economic warning sign that maybe Zuck and Musk just suck at managing social media companies in 2022?

The layoffs will be performance-based and will only target the bottom-performing employees. Hmm...the question is, how do you determine if an employee is the worst performer?

FAANG does stack ranking. I’ve seen it at Amazon, where I work. Performance also sometimes uses shit metrics and is sometimes based on personal biases and sometimes sheer luck.

Meta Cuts 600 Jobs at A.I. Superintelligence Labs - The New York Times
October 22, 2025 - The cuts, which were earlier reported by Axios, came at an intensely competitive time for Meta, which has spent the past three years dealing with the rapid onset of A.I. After ChatGPT burst onto the scene in 2022, OpenAI, Google and Microsoft hired furiously to build the next generation of A.I. chatbots and other products. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, struggled to keep up with the pack.
