I recently applied for the Facebook University for Engineering internship, and I have a coding assessment that they sent me as soon as I applied. I was wondering what kind of questions there are and any general advice for this. I'm a sophomore btw.
Seen a lot of posts regarding Facebook University so decided to make a post so its easier to find all the info in one place. If you have already applied or have applied in the past feel free to share your experience in the comments.

What was your Code Signal score
-
Was their enough time to complete all four questions
-
Types of questions/topics others should focus on.

Have you Received a response yet.
I don’t think you can check you FBU score on codesignal but taking into account test cases, I’m pretty sure I got around 900/1200. Regarding the questions, the first two are pretty much always LC easy string/array manipulation questions, the third one is matrix manipulation and for the fourth one I got a pretty trivial matrix problem as well but couldn’t optimize it to get all test cases. Btw, can anyone confirm that we do not have to fill out the questionnaire as in the last year?
I got a full 1200/1200 and took it within 4 days after the application released. However, I have not heard anything back even though I am seeing a lot a people on reddit are saying they have received responses.
I applied to Facebook University—Engineering—Summer 2022 on September 2nd, and I received a confirmation email from Facebook Recruiting stating that they received my application and should be in touch should my qualifications be suitable for the role. I haven’t received anything since, even though all applicants are supposed to be asked to complete the 70-minute coding challenge. I emailed the email address provided at the bottom of the application information (fbu@fb.com) telling them about my situation, and I received an automated response. A phone number was listed at the bottom of the email, but I called and was immediately met with a voicemail. I’ve called multiple times since then, and am still immediately met with a voicemail. I reapplied using a different email a few days ago, and I received the same confirmation email but no coding challenge invitation. Has this happened with anyone else? Any advice on what to do next?
Has anyone here applied for the FBU Product Design internship for the Summer 2022? I applied last week and just looking for people going through the process as well.
Hi everyone! I saw u/oklolcool did a guide for Explore Microsoft, so since the FBU for Engineers application is opening in a few days, I thought I'd also make a guide to help those looking to apply. I was an FBU intern this summer (2020). I also want to say that I'm pretty sure all this information can be found if you scour reddit/google, but I'm just gathering it here.
Timeline
-
This year, the application period is August 24 to October 7 (taken the from website)
-
Last year, I applied mid-september
-
Received a HackerRank the same day, which was due at the end of October (last year was the first year they sent out coding challenges)
-
They started reviewing applications at the beginning of November
-
I received an additional information request shortly after (iirc it was asking about work eligibility)
-
Contacted late November for a 30-minute, nontechnical video interview
-
Interviewed beginning of December
-
Received a call with an offer mid-December with 1 week to accept/decline
My Resume
Nothing spectacular tbh. Interned at a small startup previously, and had an extremely basic hackathon project. I go to a non-flagship state school. I truly believe the only reason I received an interview is because I had Google CSSI (also an amazing program) on my resume. However, that was also on my resume when I applied as a freshman and got rejected (the second year I applied was when I received an offer). It's pretty much just luck.
Coding Challenge + Interview
-
I remember the HackerRank being the easiest one I did (and this is coming from someone who barely touches Leetcode and has yet to take an algorithms class). I finished with plenty of time to spare (it was 90 mins, but the website says 70 mins this year). It was the first year they sent HackerRanks so I'm not sure if they're going to adjust the difficulty.
EDIT: it seems like they switched to code signal this year, and that people are having trouble with the shorter time limit/possibly more difficult questions. I'd advise you to take the time you need to prepare, because I'm pretty sure it's NOT on a rolling basis.
-
Video Interview: strictly behavioral and pretty casual. Asked about my favorite app and what I would improve about it, my areas of interest, why Facebook, etc.
Other notes
-
If you get an offer, you'll be sorted into either Android or iOS development. In past years (and this year), there have been twice as many Android interns as iOS. This is because 2/3 of the FBU Engineering interns are located in Menlo Park (Facebook HQ), and the remaining 1/3 are in Seattle. The Menlo Park interns are split half/half as Android and iOS and the Seattle interns are all Android. I'm not sure if this will change if the program is remote next year. As far as I know, you do not get to choose or request which track you are put into.
-
I'm not sure about the ratio of freshman:sophomores, but in my intern pod, it was evenly split.
-
I got a call with an offer after normal business hours, Pacific Time (same as Facebook HQ). The call came from a number with a 650 area code (I don't know if this is the same for everyone).
-
You do not need experience with mobile development. The first 3 weeks of the internship is literally just learning how to build an app.
-
You will need your high school transcript to apply
-
We were paid $5300/month this year (was on the website last year, but I don't see it for next year) with corporate housing or a housing stipend
-
It's pretty widely known that the 8-week FBU for Engineers is basically just training for the 12-week SWE internship the next year
Feel free to ask me questions! It was honestly such an amazing experience; if you're considering applying, please do! I will say that if you're looking to work on a product that's in-use, this might not be the internship for you. For FBU, you work on a personal app (if the internship was in person, it would've been a group app), but you have a lot of freedom to build whatever app you want to. You're basically getting paid to learn mobile development and make a side project!

p.s. you can also ask me about google cssi :)
How was it like, how hard were the interviews, what did you guys do at the internship, what stats do you need to get into the program. How was the compensation like. Did you have a github, What type of projects did u do in order to get into the program.

I did irise and it was a phenomenal experience. You just need to 1) get an interview and 2) do decent in the interview. The questions they ask aren't difficult... What could they ask a freshman, anyways?
Pretty great. Would recommend to any freshman
Relatively easy. One question on arrays, one on LL, one a brain teaser then one interview was behavioral.
Worked on stuff... it was very very very specific and limited unlike my friend who worked at a small company and moved around a lot
Be passionate... each has it's own requirements.
Uh I got 20+, a friend of mine at Google EP NY got 29?
Yes
Side projects
Hey all, I've finally settled down from the excitement of getting into FBU analytics and wanted to provide my personal experience of how I got in. I wish this info was available when I was applying which is why I'm writing this, hope it helps!
Quick Background: From a non-target school. Also I am ironically not a CS major.
Recruiting Process:
- The first stage is to apply to the website and complete the application and essays. I submitted 3 essays to the 3 prompts that they required. The word count matters less than the quality of the essay you submit. Facebook recommends just spending a couple hours on it, but I spent days perfecting my essays. I suggest you do the same, as thousands of others are applying as well.
To the interview stage! There was a welcome Zoom call before the interviews started where current FB employees detailed their daily responsibilities, culture at FB, benefits, etc nothing about the interviews themselves. During this call, I saw nothing but Harvard, MIT, Yale, and other ivy leagues on the call which did get me a bit worried. I started having imposter syndrome but I seriously hope those of you who get to this stage understand that you were selected for a reason. Use the worry as fuel to study harder if anything
The interviews themselves:
A 'prep' email is sent out that vaguely states two interviews will take place: a technical interview (you can use any programming language), and a product sense interview.
**Overarching advice for both interviews**: Facebook and really any tech company are looking for STRUCTURED AND SYSTEMATIC thinking. PLEASE DO NOT just jump into the problem and start to bable. Take a minute breath and then structure your thoughts into buckets.
Technical Inteview: Again you can use any langaguge (java, python, SQL). I had limited (and I mean limited) experience with SQL and Python. I found SQL to be easier so I spent the next two weeks taking 1-2 hours every day learning and mastering SQL. So much so that I actually ended up getting the data engineering role rather than the data science one (which is a bit more technical). Honestly only basic SQL is needed so its good to master the fundamentals than go further into concepts like window functions. Again here lay out how you will solve the problem before solving it. I made 2 syntax errors but because I communicated how I would solve the challenge, my interviewer was happy. Do practice problems to study ( I can't disclose specific problems).
Product Sense Interview: Here is where that structured thinking really comes into play. Do NOT just start speaking, take a quick min and structure your thoughts. Then start answering the questions in a systematic kind of flow. I can't even tell you how many product management videos I watched on YouTube to prepare and how much they helped me. Product management exercises is also a good resource. Do a bunch of these problems (preferably Facebook ones).
After speaking to other candidates you should expect an email requesting a quick phone call with you 3-5 days after the interview. I got mine early, 2 days after my interview. I hopped on the call and that's when my recruiter told me I got in!
This 8 week internship leads to a return 12 week internship offer and then a full time offer to work at Facebook as a data engineer or data scientist!
Sorry if this was long, there's just not a lot of info out there on Facebook University in general and I know this would help calm my nerves during the process. If any of you have questions please don't hesitate to ask! Good luck everyone!
I just recently changed my major, and I want to keep my past studies on my Facebook profile while adding my new major to it as a separate/new entry. However, when I go to add an end date to that previous college entry, it will allow me to "save" it but it won't change anything no matter how many times I try to fix it. I want my new major to read from March 2024 (when I changed it) to the present, and my previous major to read from September 2022 (when I started at the school) to March 2024. That, or if I could change the new major to September 2022 (when I started at the school) to present but still change my previous major to September 2022 to March 2024. I know this isn't an issue with not marking the "Graduated" box because I have a previous university listed before both of these entries, that I did not graduate from, and have a start and end date entered that Facebook approves of. I just want the information to be correct, and not erase any of my previous titles that I feel proud to have had (even if I've changed them now). Please help!
Has anyone gotten contacted back yet? To those of you who have, if it isn't too personal, what information did they ask for? Thanks!
Edit: If you could also state whether you're a freshman or sophomore too, I'm sure everyone would appreciate the info!
I remember updating it back then when I got into college in 2019 and since I dont post anything on Facebook, my friends got notified about it and it was on people’s news feed.
I want to update it since I graduated, will my friends be notified about it again? I just want it to be on my wall so when people visit my profile it’ll look nice lol🤦♂️.
I applied to FBU and they immediately sent me an OA. Do they send these to everyone who applies?
If not, I'm guessing that there were some buzzwords that their parser really liked in my resume because it was too fast for someone to have manually looked over my application.
Hey all,
I just applied to Facebook University for Engineering and immediately got an email asking to finish a 70-min online coding assessment within 7 days. I am wondering if I should just be grinding Leetcode for the next few days. The email says I should have a good knowledge of data structures and algorithms, but I'm only 1 month in for my algos class. Any advice on what I should prepare for? I'm low-key kinda freaking out.

I’m starting at new educational institution this year and no matter what I put for my start year, it is always showing up as “studied at” on my profile, when I want it to be in the present tense.
Hello,
I’m experiencing an issue when trying to update the education section of my Facebook profile. I couldn't find the info in FB HC and contact FB as well.
When I search for my new university to add into my profile, the official page does not appear in the list of colleges. Only unrelated or program-specific pages are shown.
Additionally, my academy that I graduated is also not appearing correctly in the education section. I previously created a “life event” for graduation post but later deleted it, possibly skipping a step in the removal process. This might have caused a glitch or conflict in the system.
The Facebook app is fully updated, and I’ve tried restarting it, but the issue persists.
Could you please help restore normal functionality? Pictures attached.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Reddit always help! 💪
Has anyone taken it yet? If so how did you feel about it? Any tips or pointers for hacker-rank like tests in general?
It's nothing too crazy; just make sure you know your data structures and you should be pretty much set. It's definitely still worth doing some brushing-up beforehand.
Hackerrank has several practice problems available (same with Leetcode and any other standard coding interview practice site) that could help you get in the mindset.
Good luck!
If you have ever coded before and know what strings, arrays, etc are you will be fine
I applied a little more than 3 weeks ago without a referral for the 2022 internship position and I haven’t heard back. I haven’t seen people in this subreddit talk about it either. Have y’all been getting OAs or any idea on when the recruitment starts?
Same. From what I ve heard FB will start interview in September. That being said, a lot of people who applied with a referral heard back from recruiters about future scheduling.
Do you guys receive some kind of confirmation when you apply at Facebook? I applied to two positions and I had no email confirmation and now I am doubting myself that i mistyped the email or something.
Hi!
I applied to the FBU Data Analytics program and made it to the final interview. I was wondering if anyone on this sub has gotten the program and could tell me more about the level of experience they had before the internship, what they did to prepare for the interviews, and what they got out of the experience.
Thanks in advance!!!
EDIT: How long did it take people to get decisions and how do they contact you about it?
