Is This an Example of a False Dilemma?

Depends on the consequences in the case of siding with neither.

If by choosing the side of the oppressed, you could have contributed to a decrease in injustice, however small, then not doing so is equivalent to siding with the oppressors.

The opposite of the false dilemma is the "argument to moderation" or middle ground fallacy. Just because you can imagine a middle ground between two extremes, does not make that position acceptable.

False dilemma

A big one right now is in the gun control "argument". News media are notorious for presenting public options as a binary choice: do nothing or pass federal gun control legislation.

ELI5: what is a false dichotomy?
False dichotomy is when you list two options as though they're the only two options when they aren't. For example, "either you support invading Pakistan or you support terrorists" is a false dichotomy - perhaps you hate terrorists but think an invasion of Pakistan would be an ineffective way to fight them, for example. Risky v. Smart Much of life revolves around taking bets, and the smartest route is not always the most risk-averse one. It is less about never taking risks and more about picking the right risks to take. Kind v. Confrontational There’s a pervasive myth that ‘nice’ people are meek. For example: confronting a close friend who’s developed an alcohol addiction is the kind course of action; letting them spiral further into addiction would be cruel.

However, false dilemmas can become harmful when they’re used to purposely exclude options in order to distort an argument. False dilemmas can also be used to imply that two contrasting positions are actually contradictory. We’ll see an example of that in our comic below:

July 24, 2023 - The false dilemma fallacy occurs when someone misrepresents an issue by offering only two options (when more exist) or by presenting the options as mutually exclusive (when they are not). In the example above, supporting the new law or accepting chaos are presented as the only options available, while the middle ground is being ignored (i.e., one may not want society to descend into chaos but may also be concerned about human rights).
