From my understanding, a false dichotomy is when someone tries to create a situation or claim by ignoring other possible options. For example, Sally doesn't believe in God, so she must be an atheist. Or, Bill doesn't want to live in Texas, so he must either move to California or Alaska. However, when I tried to make a hypothetical "what if" scenario, people tried to argue it was false dichotomy. For example, there a millions of beliefs. Person A freely chose to believe x and person B freely chose to believe z. IF option x is correct y happens. IF option x is correct, t happens. In this hypothetical what if game, option x is superior to option x. Seems like the use of "IF" and "Could" would nullify any false dichotomy retorts.

The argument is unclear. I think you used "option x" in a few places in your post when you meant "option y," but even so, it is still sounding like there are options a, b, c that you are excluding from your presented idea of "what if," and so I could see why that would come across as a false dichotomy. However I'm only saying that in this case where there is a lack of context.

"If...then" is kind of the basis of logic, so of course there's nothing wrong with making that kind of statement. That doesn't mean it "nullifies" the possibility of using a false dichotomy, though. You can still make a false dichotomy fallacy if you make an argument that relies on choosing the better of two options without showing that those are actually the only two options. "If taking the train is safer than taking the car, then you should take the train" would be an example of an "if...then" statement that is faulty because of a false dichotomy fallacy. Perhaps there is a third option that is safer than trains or cars, or perhaps there's a completely different option that doesn't involve traveling at all. The fallacy is that you're saying that one option is the best simply because it's better than something else. The fallacy may make more sense if you call it by its other names, the false dilemma fallacy or the either/or fallacy.
