My method is to jump back and forth between Azgaar and Donjon and screenshot all the shapes I like - I find Donjon better for large, Earth-like continental masses and Azgaar better for large islands and archipelagos. Then I slap them together in whatever photo editor I have handy, and that's my first draft. I typically ignore any topology that's generated; I'd rather work out some tectonics myself and put in my mountains that way, but that's just me. Knowing a thing or two about tectonics will also let you spot any parts of the map that look unlikely to occur naturally, so you can revise it for future drafts. I make heavy use of tools like MapToGlobe - make sure your map's image file is exactly twice as wide as it is tall (known as the square/rectangular projection - Donjon can generate this for you) and you can upload it (Planet > Surface) and see what it looks likes on a sphere. You can do the same thing in GPlates , which is clunky to use at first, but is much easier to draw borders on, allowing you to trace your map and edit the shapes of your landmasses to avoid warping at the poles. A basic guide on using GPlates is here . If you're like me and you're feeling really neurotic about it I've done some ridiculous stuff like printing off the shapes I want, sticking them to my computer screen, cranking the brightness and tracing the outline in GPlates, but I realize that's overkill for most people haha. In your experience, what world map generator (free or otherwise) has given the most naturalistic results? I'm not opposed to paying for map software if it gives good results.

Nortantis is a free, open source fantasy map generator I made. It uses a tectonic plate simulator to generate landmasses. If you want a world-sized map, use a large “World size” when creating the map, along with a low “Edge land probability” and a high “Center land probability”. A couple weeks ago I released a new version with a re-worked UI and installers for Windows and Ubuntu Linux.

March 11, 2024 - Personally, I think Mapgen4 is useful if you’re just starting worldbuilding for your novel. Because the initial landmass is generated at random and is climatologically accurate, it can give you a realistic landscape to work with as you begin to develop your fictional world. A sample map I made using Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator.
