Robin Hobb takes an unusual approach in her fantasy novels, in that each series, despite having completely independent storylines, characters, and plots are all set in the same world – just different parts of it.

May 30, 2020 - I think of the presence of maps in genre fantasy novels as a function of needing to establish that the fundamentals of physics are the same in the particular fantasy realm as in the real world. Yes, the fantasy realm has magic and gods and demons and what have you, but if it can be mapped it can’t be that different from our own world!

I love it when an author creates a fantasy world in their book, and then is nice enough to give us a map to help navigate through the world.

December 11, 2015 - The Marauder’s Map may not be a true fantasy map as we all think of them, but it’s perhaps the most fun. I’m conflicted over including this entry, as none of the Discworld books include a map in them. But, over 41 novels, there’s no denying that Terry Pratchett built an incredible world. Aside from the fact that it’s a world resting on the backs of four great elephants, all stood on the shell of a space-surfing turtle, there’s just so much geography, history, and variety on the Discworld!

And why should the reader stay away from The Old Fen? I’ve had people commission maps with names crossed out, or characters’ names scribbled on them as though they themselves drew it. Your map is a part of the book and can be part of the story, if you want it to be.

March 3, 2017 - The Princess Bride covers a lot less area than some of these sweeping fantasy epics, but the map of Florin and Guilder is still one of the most beautiful and intricately detailed of the fantasy maps. You can track our heroes from their picnic by the ravine in Guilder all the way to the Zoo of Death in Florin. ... Look, I have my quarrels with the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones (where the HELL is Lady Stoneheart?), but I have to hand to them: they kept the map in the beginning. And it's pretty darn close to the map from the books, just with much more dramatic music.

June 17, 2025 - The book itself has a map which is very obviously Europe upside-down, with all the countries given anagrammatic names. R.F. Kuang's The Poppy War has a map showing the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, the author has jokingly said that "Any resemblance to real-life countries is mere coincidence" (But we can clearly see a fantasy version of both from China and Japan) Most of Harry Turtledove's Alternate History novels include world maps showing the political layout of the book's timeline.

January 1, 2025 - Only include what’s needed when making your fantasy map. This series is also known for its worldwide disputes with various characters residing in different parts of the lands. Again, because of this, there’s a map for the world placed inside the book so readers can envision the relation of different places. This map is different than Sanderson’s in that it has a key, with different markers to help the reader visualize what’s in different locations.
