More context: I have a narrow strip near a an area I just cleared for vegetable gardening and I want to plant a shrub there that's taller than it is wide with or without pruning. Since its next to a vegetable zone, it might get some water on it (or at least on the roots) during summer. Ideally the plant would be evergreen and flower. I already know of a few plants that somewhat fit this description, but curious to hear what else is out there. Extra points for a plant that's normally dormant without summer water. Area is Los Angeles.

Tall (6-7 feet) fast growing Northeastern US Plants
Might be kinda far for you, but Blue Stem Natives in Norwell looks like they have 2 quart pots of big bluestem in stock. Russell's in Wayland MA also has a surprisingly big and varied native selection. Common evening primrose is biennial, so if you get one that looks like more than just a seedlomg or basal rosette (what it looks like in the first year), it can grow quite large in a single season, like 8ft+ in some cases. It will self-seed like crazy, but maybe that's a plus? How moist is the soil? More on reddit.com

Need a hedge that matures to 6 ft. Fast growing.
If you want fast to 6 feet then I would suggest upright junipers, but if you want max 6 feet then I’d go with green mountain boxwoods. I can’t think of anything that will grow fast to 6 ft then stop growing taller though More on reddit.com

r/NativePlantGardening on Reddit: Tall (6-7 feet) fast growing Northeastern US Plants
March 3, 2025 -

I just planted a new hedge, but it will be years before the new trees/shrubs are big enough to fill the space and provide privacy. I have a few fast growing short lived perennials and annuals that will get to 6-7 feet and some Joe Pye Weed but it still feels sparse. I'm going to try and collect some of my common milkweed seeds and get a new patch going there next year. I try to keep the garden mostly native (or at least beneficial to the same bugs/bees/animals in my area) so was thinking Big Bluestem Grass could fill the space, but can't find it anywhere locally except small plugs. The area, at least until the new trees/shrubs fill in, is full all day sun.

Any suggestions for plants that will get tall/full enough to provide some privacy?

Anyone know where I could get somewhat mature Big Bluestem within an hour or so of North Shore MA?

Any other suggestions for providing some added privacy? I've seen some fun garden decor if anyone has recommendations on where to find that.

Edit: Added a milkweed flower picture for visibility
