r/Permaculture on Reddit: Fastest possible growing non-invasive privacy hedge? Roadside, pretty dry soil, zone 6b.
August 12, 2025 -

I am at the end of my rope with my looky-loo neighbors across the street and their endless parade of random visitors/guests. I live in a quite rural area and when I bought the house, I looked at the map and there is one house down a small street across from me. I figured how bad can one house be? Reader, the traffic in and out of this place is crazy. And they love nothing more than to park at the end of their road and stare at my house.

I have tried miscanthus giganteus; it has grown a bit (planted 2 years ago) but hasn't gotten too tall and is still quite sparse. I hope it will fill in in coming years but not sure it will. Other things I've tried have failed to thrive, as the soil is nutrient-poor and tends to be quite dry, especially as we are in a drought.

One begins in such a situation to be tempted by invasives. I won't do it, but can anyone recommend something that grows in an invasive-like weedy manner that will provide some cover from these folks while the rest of the food forest matures? It won't be an issue in a couple of years as other things I've planted closer to the house grow in, but right now I need a quick fix. I'm in zone 6b, Maryland.

Plants for Mixed Privacy Screens | University of Maryland Extension
Some exotic, non-native plants used for screens in the past (bamboo, European privet, Chinese silvergrass, Chinese wisteria, Japanese barberry, and burning bush) are now invasive in natural areas. Invasive plants are problematic because they grow rapidly and displace native plants, change soil chemistry, degrade wildlife habitat, and alter fire frequency.

May 25, 2024 - Heights vary according to species and cultivar, with yews growing anywhere from 2 to 60 feet tall. Many viburnums (Viburnum spp.) make excellent evergreen screens. There are numerous species and varieties with a wide range of sizes. They are shade tolerant. Viburnums are available for virtually any situation, and they will add to the landscape with flowers and berries. Wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is excellent for difficult sites with its tolerance of poor soil. This broadleaf evergreen shrub or tree grows quickly to 15 to 20 feet high and wide, and is tolerant of pruning.

1. Tall, fast growing plants for privacy? And 2: reliable sources?
consider some sort of hedgerow. that's what we're doing in a similar situation. it might not be as fast-growing as some other options but a healthy mix of trees and vines will house lots of birds and bugs and whatnot which is nicer to look at in the long run than a row of all one thing. ours is a lot of plums and dogwoods and wild roses More on reddit.com

My favorite is elbow bush especially since you get alot of shade. I would include mt laurel and tx persimmon as those are also found in shade. Please cut and tarp the nandina, its invasive and becoming a problem in natural areas. More on reddit.com
