Don't use bleach... I would take it to a laundromat where you can use a big washer to wash it in COLD water. Don't go crazy with the detergent, and use double rinse (if possible). I have a lot of faux fur items (rugs, blankets, throws, pillow covers etc) and I wash the smaller items in my home machine and the large ones at a laundromat. I would recommend NOT using the dryer. It is the death to faux fur. What I sometimes do, is put it in the dryer for a few minutes (literally 2-3 minutes) to warm up the fibers, fluff things up. Take it out...shake it out vigorously and then line dry. More on reddit.com

April 27, 2024An update on the faux fur rug: it washes beautifully and I’m so glad I bought it!
Rug item number: 1551490 Throw, also from Costco, item number: 1553553 86d ago, I posted about having hesitantly bought this faux fur rug and asking lots of return questions at customer service in case it didn’t wash well and look as good. Well, lemme tell ya: it washes amazingly well! I usually wash it every 2-3wks (light dose of soap only, no softener) to keep it looking light and bright. Lately, though, I’ve had to wash it 3x in the last 2wks due to having houseguests with a male dog, so our little idiot floof keeps marking the rug, since the new boy likes to lay on it. This thing is so easy to care for and fluffs up immediately as soon as it’s dry. I usually hang it over the end of a dining room chair or on an outdoor chair to dry and it dries in a couple hours. Then you get the joy of ruffling your fingers across the top of it to fluff it back up, and it looks just like new. January 1, 2022Cleaning faux fur rug
Oh I have something like this (from Costco, but similar)... I have a HE washer (front loader) and I wash them in COLD water with minimal detergent (I usually use Woolite and I don't use a full amt). I use a high spin. Don't use fabric softener or additives like scent beads. The most important thing with these rugs, is to NOT use the dryer. So what I do, is I take it out of the washer, give it a good shake. Then I put it in the dryer (with some old towels if you are just washing one) and the dryer set on LOW, let it go for about 2 minutes. Literally. Set a timer. You just want it to warm up a bit, and fluff up the fibers. Then you take it out, shake it and line dry. This is how I wash all those rugs...and I even have some that are real hides that I wash in a similar way (not dryer tho) and they all look brand new. So I hope it works for you! More on reddit.com

July 29, 2014 - I too am allergic to wool, but it is the short fibres in spun wool, not the long silky wool on sheepskins that are an irritant. The skins are 'scoured' meaning cleaned thoroughly, so no lanolin is still present. I have never noticed any smell at all, and if dirty, just throw it in the washing machine and hang to dry, so maintenance is very easy. People here use them for all kinds of purposes other than rugs - babies often sleep on them, they are sometimes used in carseats, and dog and cat beds.
