you put your label on the side you want UP during the sort at all times. don't put it over a gap, crease, or bend. don't tape over the barcodes. if sending something circular, make sure the label is 100% flat on the roll. don't let it roll with the roll. More on reddit.com

I ship hundreds of packages a year via FedEx. I recently went over to a friends house and he places his labels on the longer side that faces out when boxes are stacked (think a shoebox label). I always put mine at the top so if the box is stacked, it would be covered.
I asked him why and he said its easier for the drivers to read and scan the label when boxes are stacked and they're in the truck. It makes sense as I've seen the trucks and the shelves they are on. But is that the best place to put them? What about when it arrives at some sort of processing facility?

Boxes are hand scanned at the station level and auto scanned from all sides in the hubs. Personally, I don't care which side of the box you put the label. I do care if you place it over the folds (makes it hard for the scanners to scan the label and it can rip your label in half) or if you fold your label over two sides of the box (you can't scan and read the address at the same time when shippers do this).
