I'm new to Fedora and so far I knew a few ways of installing application:

Use the "dnf install $appname"
Download the RPM package then "dnf install $the-rpm-package"
Use the flatpak
Use the tarball, extract then run the .sh file
And using appimage (Yup, I know this is not technically called an "install")

I'm pretty sure the dnf upgrade won't affect the appimage, but does it helps upgrade the apps from flatpak, tarball and rpm? if there are options available in all of them what method should I choose to install an app

Dnf upgrade should update anything installed through dnf install $package. I think it updates stuff installed from a downloaded rpm package. It doesn't update flatpaks, appimages, or tar files installed with make or a script, though. Flatpak stuff can be updated with flatpak update or through Gnome Software (which will also update rpms). I honestly don't know how appimages and updates work, outside of downloading the new update. For apps installed through scripts, check the individual repos for update instructions.

dnf is the way.

For all distributions your preferred method of installing applications should always be from the distribution repositories. So for Fedora this means using DNF from the terminal or a graphical tool from your desktop environment (e.g. GNOME Software for GNOME). If something is not available in the Fedora repositories, you should try to find and add a third party repository to your system. RPMFusion is a popular one because it includes some software that Fedora can't ship due to licensing issues.

Some applications are also available as flatpaks, this includes some popular proprietary applications like Steam, Spotify or VS Code. GNOME Software also allows you to install and manage Flatpak applications or you can use the flatpak command from the command line.

Manually downloading and installing RPMs is also possible, but you should avoid this if possible -- when installing from a repository (or with flatpaks) your applications will be updated when a new version is pushed to the repository, you don't need to actively check the website for a new package to download (you still need to actively start the update using DNF/flatpak, but it's one "action" for all your applications).

And you can also compile the application from source but you should be able to avoid this and install everything you need from repositories.

Hi everyone,

so I'm pretty new to Fedora and Linux in general and I have some questions in regard to how packages and package installation work.

Firstly, when using #dnf install packagename can you assume that whatever repository the package is being sourced from, is safe to install from and how do I check which repositories that are being searched for the package.

Secondly, is it ok to assume that packages from online sites like koji.fedoraproject.org or src.fedoraproject.org are safe. It seems to me like not just anyone can upload packages there, but I haven't found a definitive answer yet.

Well the fedora packages repos are pre installed and those are the ones you use out of the box and they are safe, how to know the repo: when you type "sudo dnf install" dnf shows you the source before you enter y

Fyi Bodhi and Koji are the update server and the build server for Fedora so yes they are safe.
