7. Declarative REST Client: Feign
Feign is a declarative web service client. It makes writing web service clients easier. To use Feign create an interface and annotate it. It has pluggable annotation support including Feign annotations and JAX-RS annotations. Feign also supports pluggable encoders and decoders.
When to use Open Feign and when not?
RestTemplate is not deprecated, it's feature complete meaning it will not longer have more features. It's fine to use it with spring boot 3 More on reddit.com
pretend, a feign inspired declarative HTTP client
Very cool. Support for a lightweight HTTP client like ureq or minreq would be awesome though, since often times I will create a simple crate that does basic HTTP requests to a basic API (or just download a tarball or two), but don't want to have to import an entire async runtime stack and complex feature-complete HTTP client into what is otherwise a small library. Introducing SpecMock: Easily create mock Server for @Controller and @FeignClient in exist class!
Testcontainers is the latest goto for integration tests that involves JPA tests, API tests etc. recently i tried this over unit tests and it was pretty awesome. I no longer had to mock all the unnecessary dependencies. All I had to worry about was my input and output and most importantly the tests were executed over a live environment instead of a mock. On a side note, recently docker acquired testcontainers so I am guessing of some good features down the pipeline for integration. More on reddit.com
Colon character getting encoded as %3A in PathVariable while using in Feign Client
All I want is, it should remain as it is in path variable of my feign client api. Why? It will get decoded on the receiving end, and : is not considered 'url safe'. More on reddit.com

Navigating Client-Server Communication with Spring’s @FeignClient Annotation
March 30, 2026 - When a microservice wants to call another service’s API, developers often use HTTP clients or REST templates to make those calls. Although these are functional methods, they entail a lot of boilerplate code, making the codebase harder to maintain and understand. The @FeignClient annotation streamlines this process by abstracting the HTTP client layer, allowing developers to focus more on business logic and less on infrastructural concerns.

Each feign client is part of an ensemble of components that work together to contact a remote server on demand, and the ensemble has a name that you give it as an application developer using the @FeignClient annotation. Spring Cloud creates a new ensemble as an ApplicationContext on demand ...

r/SpringBoot on Reddit: When to use Open Feign and when not?
April 28, 2024 -
I want to write a simple REST POST API , this will be invoked by cross team to send json data and then I have to process this data and give status OK back as response, if validation passes.
Since I am going to use all new tech stack, Java 21, Spring 3.2.5 I am confused on using Open Feign .
Since REST template is deprecated I want to make choice between open feign and wen Client.
-
will it be good to use Open Feign here in above small use case ?
-
Does cross team who willing to call my endpoint have to write code using Spring cloud open feign too?
-
Any other cons to consider?

Spring has now its own declarative REST client - HttpExchange. Use HttpExchange with RestClient (Spring MVC) or WebClient (Spring WebFlux).

Getting Started with NetFlix Feign Client - Masterspringboot
Feign is a declarative web service client that simplifies the process of making HTTP requests in a Spring Boot application. It allows you to define a Java interface and annotate it with mappings to REST endpoints, making the code more readable and maintainable.

FeignClient (Spring Cloud Netflix Core 1.3.6.RELEASE API)
Annotation for interfaces declaring that a REST client with that interface should be created (e.g. for autowiring into another component). If ribbon is available it will be used to load balance the backend requests, and the load balancer can be configured using a @RibbonClient with the same name (i.e. value) as the feign client.

OpenFeign vs WebClient: How to Choose a REST Client for Your Spring Boot Project
June 5, 2025 - A basic OpenFeign client looks like this: @FeignClient(name = "book-service") public interface BookClient { @GetMapping("/books/{id}") User getBookById(@PathVariable("id") Long id); } You can then inject BookClient like any Spring Bean: @Service public class BookService { @Autowired private BookClient bookClient; public User getBook(Long id) { return bookClient.getBookById(id); } } OpenFeign is well integrated with Spring Cloud Discovery Service (Eureka), Spring Cloud Config, and Spring Cloud LoadBalancer.
