Hello I just got my hands on the festool Planex east drywall sander. I got it for a project to smooth out the textured ceilings across the entire house. As you can see it’s working great in some rooms. However in the main room it isn’t able to remove the textured on the ceiling.
Not sure why it’s not working in the main room, do we need an extender piece that would help the sandpaper make contact with the ceiling or do we need lower grit sandpaper? Currently using 120 grit.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated!

I recently dealt with this type of texture (knock-down) on every wall and ceiling in our new house so here's what I learned. Our texture was made using regular joint compound (not lightweight) so it was VERY difficult to sand down to smooth drywall. I opted to skimcoat all the walls and ceilings to smooth it out, but in retrospect, I should have just put 1/4" drywall over the old ceiling. It would have been much easier and way quicker than skimcoating. I say all this to point out that some of your texture may have been made using lightweight joint compound and some may have been made with regular joint compound, hence the sander having a harder time in the main room. Hope that helps.

It seems that the lack of proper contact could be easily tested for by getting on a ladder.

For small drywall repairs we sand with a Festool 5" orbital sander attached the the Midi vac, again a great set up for us. ... I should have added that we also sand off texture ceilings with the Planex, dust free. Something that we find ourselves doing more off these days. As others said there is a learning curve and sanding a ceiling you will know you done something. Also make sure you get the correct vac hose to hook up the Planex, and it's not cheap. ... I run a property maintenance company and do a lot of painting and decorating, including ceiling crack repair. I've been trying to resist buying the Festool Planex 2 with CTM 36AC dust extractor. I'm thinking of a compelling reason not to spend £2500 and I'm hoping the good folk of Reddit will tell me it's rubbish. Thank you....

If you'll be able to make a return on the investment within a reasonable time I don't have an issue with it. Being clean is an important part of good customer service. I have 2 cordless shop vacs for that reason. Makes cleaning up easy faster and easier and that means a happy customer.

Festool are known for their dust collection if being clean is a priority for you than it’s absolutely worth the investment. There’s a few competitors that make good products but festool has a cult following for a reason

While one can in theory use regular dust extractors for small jobs with hand sanders, the amount of nasty drywall dust which can be created by the Planex is too high for a regular dust extractor to cope with and requires this extractor. If one uses a regular dust extractor, its bag may get clogged too soon, plus small dust particles may clog and "kill" the pricey HEPA filter. With some additional investments, one can use this vacuum as a regular dust extractor for woodworking, just as any other Festool extractor.
