Yes, I use a Festool ETS with a little Rigid shop vac, maybe 2-3HP with a dust cyclone on top. I had to buy a Festool dust hose separately but that thing is great on its own. Sanding is a very dust-free experience, I never have any on my clothes or hands to speak of after long sanding sessions. The sander does build up a little dust around the intake holes and hose port, but it's easily cleaned out with compressed air. I usually use 3M Cubitron sandpaper, it lets plenty of air through and you don't have to fuss with aligning the holes to the sander. More on reddit.com

It is extremely effective. There is a reason it is used by high end professionals and costs so much. When a festool vac is used in combination with a festool (or similar high end sander like Mirka) and as someone else mention mesh style sandpaper: 95% of dust is collected. Sanding overhead or edges can be challenging to the dust collection system. But go on YouTube or Instagram and watch some videos. They are very effective sanding systems. If low/no dust is a priority it is very much worth the investment. More on reddit.com

I got the RO150 and the vacuum. I wouldn't recommend it without the vacuum. The dust collection is really superb on it.

I have a Makita BO5041K 5-Inch ROS with which I use a 5HP shopvac for dust collection. I know that dust collection is happening as there is usually very little on the work piece but the outside of my sander usually has a fair amount and my clothes are covered in fine dust when I am done. Nothing a little compressed air can't take care of obviously.
That said, does anyone run a festool ETS with a shop vac? How is the dust collection? Do you still have fine dust on the sander and your clothes when done or are these units that efficient with the dust collection, even with a shop vac, that there is virtually nothing left over?
I'm finally getting around to a bunch of sanding I've been procrastinating on because I loathe being covered in dust even after just 45-60 mins of sanding. No one enjoys sanding but if a better sander will reduce my procrastination to doing it then I'm game to make the investment.
Any insight would be appreciated.

I ran my ETS on a shop vac and it ran so much better and quieter when I invested in the Festool vac. The Festool vac has out lasted a Rigid and a Fein vac and it’s still working great.

September 6, 2011 - FYI, you don’t have to use a Festool CT to use the sanders. You can use a run-of-the-mill shop vac with a step-down adapter for the hose and a pigtail adapter to attach to the tool. Even a simple compact vacuum like the Home Depot’s $20 “Bucket Head” would suffice.
