I wouldn’t judge the product on a shitty install. They make a lot of metal siding which will think is superior but again quality of install is the limiting factor. Fiber cement (Hardie) is heavy and brittle. It is both fire and rot resistant and holds paint well. It is available in a wide variety of styles and textures (shingle, plank, etc, false stucco, etc). Hardie requires a bit more maintenance than composite (it needs periodic repainting). Composite is going to be ultra low maintenance (as in no paint necessary). Either one is a great option.
