Use your hold stocks and sell covered calls. Sell CSP's to buy those hold stocks. What others are telling you is right.....options is basically the stock markets casino.....house always wins....I use Ford, Coterra, AT&T as my go to covered call stocks....if you get pinned just roll them over to the next week. I'm guessing that when you say "SELL" you mean "SELL to CLOSE" as opposed to "SELL to OPEN"? If so, then level 2 is likely what you want. Fidelity cannot approve tier one options for a 40 year old man with 20k in thier brokerage account. Is tier one not the kiddie pool? Granted I have no experience trading options before my application but I think I understand the risks! When this application gets denied who do you recommend I move my business to? Edit: this is my second application, filled out honestly, for tier one.

It took me 3 years to get options trading capability at Etrade 20 years ago with a much larger portfolio. I think that it took me a year just to get margin.

I simply want to be able to BUY and SELL options CALLS and PUTS already listed for sale, and simply make money on the premium gain or lose money and never actually exercise the option. Would Level 1 Options trading allow me to simply Buy/Sell options and then make money on the premium rise and sell it before it actually needs to be exercised? Or would i have to apply for level 2 options or 3 or ??

Level 2 is what you want. Level 1 only allows you to sell covered calls on stocks that you own.

Which one can I buy calls and sell the contract? Also options trading in general questions:

So if a call is set to expire on 3/5, does it expire 3/5 at 4pm est or when it literally is 3/5 at 12am est?

So if you exercise your call before 3/5, don't you have to wait T+2 until you own that stock? What if the price does down after 3/5?
Example, I put a call for $10 expiring 3/5, on 3/4 it is $15. I exercise my option. Don't I have to wait T+2 before I can sell it? On 3/8 it may go back down to $9.

Anyone know the requirements for getting a higher option tier? I’ve had Tier 1 since I’ve opened my account but never get accepted for Tier 2. Not sure how strict they are with giving people new option tiers. Would love to learn more about their process if anyone knows. Thanks!

I applied for Tier 3 Trading with Fidelity. Account balance north of $7 Million. 5+ years of trading experience but new to options trading. They denied my application. I called and asked for a supervisor and was told there was nothing they could do. Just asinine. Will be opening an account with TD Ameritrade shortly.

I don't work for Fidelity, but i am an advisor for a major firm. Typically, in order for us to approve options trading, an options principal will review the request. They look to make sure that the person requesting has sufficient trading experience and assets to be able to absorb losses. Also, most, but not all, options trade require a margin account. Remember that trading options without experience has a very high level of risk and can enable you to lose your entire principle. Only traders with alot of equity experience should trade them. Many people on reddit talk about options, but realistically they are not as simple as most people believe and require alot of research and knowledge to use them properly. I would start by learning hedging strategies with buy-stops, sell-stops, stop-loss and limits before moving into options.

I am a RR/IAR for a full service broker-dealer. At my firm you either are options approved or not. And anything other than covered puts/calls has to be done on margin. That being said, options are one of the most useful tools that I use, but they are not for inexperienced, budget constrained, or unsophisticated investors.
