Fidelity cannot approve tier one options for a 40 year old man with 20k in thier brokerage account. Is tier one not the kiddie pool? Granted I have no experience trading options before my application but I think I understand the risks! When this application gets denied who do you recommend I move my business to? Edit: this is my second application, filled out honestly, for tier one.

What are options tiers?
Options trading strategies involve varying degrees of risk and complexity. Not all strategies are suitable for all investors. There are 3 tiers of options trading at Fidelity, and approval requirements are more rigorous at subsequent tiers, given the additional risks associated with more complex strategies. Your financial situation, trading experience, and investment objectives are taken into consideration for approval.

I have been approved for tier one options trading. I've noticed that the strategies are very limited it seems. To my knowledge I cant do put credit spreads, iron corridors, butterfly etc. I'm confused because to my knowledge these strategies mitigate risks. It makes sense that I cant sell naked options. But why are these less risky strategies not allowed. Let me know if I have any information incorrect. Thank you.

While those strategies you mentioned are used to mitigate risk, it also entails more complexity. If not done correctly, I’d imagine it would enhance your risk. Moreover, you’d need to have a margin account. Taking positions in some of those elements of the strategy can have undefined risks/costs. With lvl1, I think you can basically just do long calls and puts. If I remember correctly those are defined risks — your downside costs are known/limited.

Hey there, u/Neat_Lingonberry7207 , thanks for finding our official sub and making your first post. I'm happy to discuss the options trading tiers with you. Generally speaking, the strategies allowed under tier 1 options approval don't have any margin requirements, and they can be accessed by clients who don't have the margin feature enabled. Option tiers 2 and 3 generally allow for strategies that include short option positions and margin requirements that must be satisfied by a margin-enabled account. Also, the strategies that fall within tiers 2 and 3 involve increased degrees of risk and complexity. Therefore, since not all strategies are suitable for all investors, Fidelity imposes a 3 tiers system, with approval requirements being more rigorous at subsequent tiers. To review, with options tier 1 approval, clients can trade the following strategies: Buy-writes Selling covered calls Rolling covered calls Buying calls/puts Selling cash covered puts Long straddles/strangles You can take a look at the options FAQs linked below to check out the complete list for tiers 2 and 3. FAQs: Options trading Also, in the Options trading section of our Margin FAQs, you can learn more about the margin requirements for various covered and uncovered positions. FAQs: Margin We sincerely appreciate your choosing Fidelity for your brokerage needs. Please let us know if you have any follow-up questions or if you need any other resources. Our team is here to help! Options trading entails significant risk and is not appropriate for all investors. Certain complex options strategies carry additional risk. March 2, 2021 -

I simply want to be able to BUY and SELL options CALLS and PUTS already listed for sale, and simply make money on the premium gain or lose money and never actually exercise the option. Would Level 1 Options trading allow me to simply Buy/Sell options and then make money on the premium rise and sell it before it actually needs to be exercised? Or would i have to apply for level 2 options or 3 or ??

My intent is to write basic covered calls and cash secured puts within my accounts. I understand that I need to apply for Tier 1 options trading within an account to start doing this. Can it be within my IRAs or does it have to be a regular brokerage account?

Great to hear from you again, u/Scbnymph ! You are correct, you will need to apply for Tier 1 options to trade your desired strategies. Selling covered calls and cash covered puts are strategies that can be done within both your brokerage and IRA accounts. For those following along, the strategies available for Tier 1 options trading are buy-writes, selling covered calls, rolling covered calls, buying calls/puts, selling cash covered puts, and long straddles/strangles. To learn more about the strategies available for each account type and each tier, check out the FAQ tab on the link below. You can also use this link to apply for options trading. Options Trading Please keep in mind that options approval decisions are based on your trading experience (including experience trading stocks/ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, etc.) financial situation, and investment objective. Because different options trading strategies involve varying degrees of risk, approval requirements are more rigorous for higher options levels approval. We approve an applicant for the highest level for which they are eligible, up to the level requested. I currently trade options and I'm confused about options levels with fidelity. I currently can trade calls, puts, covered calls, cash covered puts and spreads but can't roll options. I want to go to the next level higher to trade calls but when I apply it says I will lose the ability to trade spreads. Seems odd? How do I get to trade spreads and rolls?

Hey there, u/jbreda007 . Nice to see you on the sub again. I am happy to provide some information for you about options trading here at Fidelity. First, let’s go over the ability to roll an option. If an account is enabled for Tier 1 options trading or higher, rolling covered calls is an available strategy. To roll an options contract, log into Fidelity.com and follow these steps: Select your account from the Portfolio, then choose the "Positions" tab Navigate to the "Options Summary" link Find the underlying symbol you desire to roll, then select the Option Strategy under the "Strategy" column Click "Roll" to start the process Next, let’s move to options tiers. Options approval decisions are based on your trading experience, financial situation, and investment objective. When your application is reviewed, you will receive a notification indicating what level you have been approved for. We will approve you for the highest level you are eligible for, up to the level you requested. You can learn more about what trades can be placed at each tier by visiting the following page. Options Trading FAQs Finally, you can view your current options tier once logged into Fidelity.com by following these steps: Expand the "Accounts & Trade" menu Choose the "Account Features" section Select "Brokerage and Trading" Click on the "Options" link If you have additional questions, feel free to follow up with us in the comments. We are happy to continue the conversation. Options trading entails significant risk and is not appropriate for all investors. Certain complex options strategies carry additional risk. Before trading options, please read the Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options . Supporting documentation for any claims, if applicable, will be furnished upon request.
