how to draw poses from memory/imagination?
for me, the key to drawing poses from imagination is 2 things: Know the basic 3d form of the figure. Your drawings, while good, look a little bit flat sometimes. It's a good idea to break the figure down into simple 3d forms (i.e. mannequin), and pay attention to how they bend and orientate. A good practice is to draw surface contours (wireframes) on your forms to make them explicit, so you fully understand the structure and orientation of each body part. Doing this will make it much easier to draw any pose in any perspective, and foreshortening will be a breeze. Know how the body moves; identify the center of gravity, then identify which way the torse is bent (forward, backwards, sideways, twisting), and then do the same for each limb. Study from photos at the start but try to draw poses from imagination using simple forms (see step above) and try to make the pose look convincing. Also, I suggest staying away from cloth at the beginning, that shit is hard af, get a good understanding of the figure first. Drawing bad cloth can be pretty demotivating. More on reddit.com

How do people come up with poses?
Most artists use references. I don't know where this idea comes from that you should do everything from your head. A lot of my comics panels are talking heads, so I don't need references for that, but I still have hundreds of images saved with action and dynamic poses. Why do you think fine artists use models? Same reasons. More on reddit.com

r/ArtistLounge on Reddit: Looking for a good classic life drawing pose reference website
March 22, 2023 -

I'm doing a traditional life drawing class at the moment and I absolutely love it, but I'm looking to practice at home. I've been finding reference photos in different places but it's not been super easy. I'm just looking for classic poses that you might see in traditional figure drawings/life drawing, a mix of dynamic and simple and variation of bodies (shapes/sizes/gender/age) would be preferable. Nude would be best but not always a necessity.

And specifically photos.

What would be amazing is a website with an archive of these. Or maybe if somebody can give me some good keywords to google. I end up having to search through lots of poses that are just not what I'm looking for (crazy poses/contemporary dance/too much going on/vaguely pornographic/too modern)

These are the kinds of drawings I'm looking to do:

How to Draw Any Pose from IMAGINATION | Love life drawing
May 19, 2023 - Because the figure is standing on one leg, I make the standing leg comes in at an angle under the figure’s weight. For more guidance on balance, check out this tutorial. I initially had both arms up but you’ll see that at this stage in the drawing I change my mind and drop one of the shoulders. Very often it’s fun and quite natural in a pose to have an action and a counter action: for example, if you have someone reaching forward with one arm and that shoulder comes forward it’s then nice to bring the other shoulder back.
