Fiio CP13 - a first impression and detailed review
Well, this is certainly more scientific than what I was about to post lol. Mine also plays a bit fast, but not too fast to listen to. Not being able to easily adjust the speed isn’t ideal, but for now, it’ll do. I gave it a good test drive over the last couple days, over my trip I’d say it had about seven hours of play time. It is a bit noisier than the WE-001 when running, but nothing loud enough to be bothersome, or even noticeable unless you bring it close. Wow+flutter was just barely better than the WE-001, with only a 12Hz variance for the CP13 vs the WE-001’s 14Hz. As you said, it’s not going to be as good as a serviced vintage player, but for just over $100 USD shipped, I think it’s just fine. I’d maybe even pay a little more, if I had to do it again. Being smaller than the WE-001, I can see this being my dedicated car unit. Keeps my old Sony’s from getting banged around. I’m gonna post some photos below this comment. More on reddit.com

Fiio CP13 is not great, but for a different reason
No it's not the cassette mechanism. It is not the best, but in my case the measured wow and flutter was 0,16% WRMS. This is tolerable and on the same level as many old cassette portables that I own (the only ones that do better are Sony WM-D6C and WM-DD22 with the disc drive mechanism). My major criticism of Fiio CP13 is on the screenshot. I recorded an RMAA reference test signal on my desktop deck, a Sony TC-K750S. When played back on the same deck, the frequency response is essentially flat between 20 and 20000 Hz when measured at a -20dB level. On the screenshot you can see two measurements: the top one taken at 0dB (Dolby) level and the bottom one at -20dB. -20dB measurement is the proper level to test the frequency response of cassette players, and at this level the response should be as flat as possible. In case of Fiio CP13 it is far from flat. Below 100Hz there is a noticeable drop up to -8dB at 30Hz. Above 1kHz the level starts to rise and reaches +5dB at 7Khz. Subjective listening confirms measurements: the sound of Fiio CP13 is too bright, with a noticeable lack of bass. Now the bass drop can be attributed to the quality of a magnetic head - and I understand that there are not many to choose from. Still, it could be corrected. The rise in high frequencies is an obvious mistake. A signal from a magnetic head needs to be equalized, high frequencies need to be boosted. They were boosted too much. This is sad especially because in other regards Fiio CP13 is a fine portable player. There is no sound from the motor leaking into the audio, like on many old budget players. The headphone amp is quite powerful (could be better though) and does not introduce any additional noise. The mechanical design is basic, but solid, as confirmed by W&F measurements. I understand they have little choice of heads and mechanisms. But the way I see it, Fiio screwed up the very thing it had under control: the playback amplifier. Still, I own old players that are worse. For example, budget Sony WM-EX models of the 90s have weak and noisy amplifiers, and an obvious treble deficiency. They sound dull. Fiio doesn't, and I could tolerate the high frequency boost, but not the lack of lower frequencies. Fiio could do better. I'm posting this in hope that they somehow learn about this, confirm it and fix the response in the next revision. Cassettes can sound better than this. My measurements are amateur, but the test tape was recorded on a well calibrated deck, and I'm quite confident that the results are more or less accurate. More on reddit.com

Fiio CP13 or vintage walkman?
The real tradeoff is reliability imo. You pay that amount for the CP13 and you know it'll work just fine and be ok - you pay for an older walkman and sometimes it sounds fantastic and sometimes it has issues that weren't advertised and you don't know till it arrives in the mail with a no returns policy. For me personally, as someone who doesn't care that much about audio quality, even cheap and nasty plastic things off amazon sound tolerable enough, so I'd be more likely to go for the reliable option. How are your FiiO CP13 experiences?
My first CP13 sounded great but broke within 24 hours, and had to be returned. My 2nd CP13 is holding up fine, but it sounded bad. Very muffled, and speed seemed off. I ended up adjusting the azimuth and tape speed, following instructions on YouTube. Now it sounds just as good as the first one did. The CP13 does have an issue where it doesn’t like to be moved around much while it’s playing. So I don’t walk around with mine much. More on reddit.com

r/cassetteculture on Reddit: Fiio CP13 - a first impression and detailed review
February 12, 2024 -

There were a few CP13 from the first batch showing up on Fiio Shop germany, so i decided to get one out of curiosity.
Today, it finally arrived and while sceptical at first, it´s first impression actually isn´t that bad.
The box is heavy, the unboxing experience great and the player itself feels very premium.
The cassette lid even locks into place properly and needs more force to be opened again - very good.

The lid has a pretty large window, which really looks stylish.

The frequency response seems pretty good on this one, there´s a good amount of trebles and the bass is punchy, but not too much.
See the attached images for more details.
Tested this player with my DT 1990 pro headphones (250 Ohm) and it´s getting decently loud, although i noticed something weird:
At low and high volume, the trebles are more present, in the middle it´s a bit reduced.
Probably caused by the high impedance of my headphones, though i haven´t noticed anything like that on my other equipment.

Also there´s quite some motor buzzing noise noticeable, similar to the WaR, but not as bad.
Still dissapointed, since the Mulann B1000, sold by Recording The Masters, doesn´t have ANY motor noise. So it´s definitely possible to get rid of it entirely!

The Fiio CP13 doesn´t have any advanced features, such as equalization settings for high bias tapes (chrome&metal) or any kind of noise reduction system, as expected.
Only type I ferric tapes will be played back correctly.
Given the already good treble response, type II/IV tapes and/or dolby encoded tapes will sound too bright.

For the wow&flutter performance, i sourced an properly recorded and calibrated test tape with a 3150kHz tone.
The amount of wow&flutter will probably reduce over time, but out of the box, it´s around 0,25%WRMS
It´s approx. 10Hz fast, so almost "spot on", but subject to change over time, as the mech loosens up).
There´s no access hole to adjust the speed! Dissasembly needed!
See the attached images for more details.

The mechanism still reacts to the device been tilted around, especiall horizontally.
The capstan&flywheel combo has a tiny little bit of play to move back and forth, causing the tape to be pulled away and worsen the treble response.
The same issue occured to the WaR and Mulann B1000, but the WaR is the worst example.
The tape usually goes back to normal after a few seconds.

I previously uploaded some test footage, to be found here, took the opportunity to simply add the CP13 here aswell.

So would i recommend the Fiio CP13 ?
Yes, it´s actually enjoyable, but a quite expensive retail price of 129€ ( Fiio Shop germany).

Will i replace my vintage gear? Hell no!

There´s still a chance to get a Sony WM EX 67x plus new belt, plus new pinch rollers, plus new battery, plus new charger for the same amount of money.
That´s obviously the better tape player, but usually needs service.

The packaging is well done, everything is covered by foam. Free protective film for the lid window, USB C charging cable Wow&Flutter Frequency response (high) Frequency response (low - threshold around 40Hz) Frequency response 18hz - 18kHz (overall - peaks correspond to test tones on the tape, everything else is backround noise "tape hiss")
