Estimated State Taxes (California) - Self Employed
I have a full-time job, but sometimes do freelance on the side. When calculating my quarterly tax (state and federal, but specifically state), do I need to be paying Self-Employment Tax, Income Tax, or both?
The state of California doesn’t collect self employment tax.
Since most of your income is a w-2 job don’t bother with quarter tax payments.
Instead reserve 35 percent of your free lance income in a savings account.
Then starting September file a new W-4 with your W-2 employer that contributes enough additional federal tax to account for your additional federal income tax and SE tax from the free lance gig. Do the same for the California equivalent.
Your cash flow will be reduced because of this and so you can safely raid your 35 percent free lance reserve to pay the light bill and buy dog food.
