It’s worth noting that the file extension is really just a part of the filename. The filename is just text, and by convention we consider the bit after the last period to be special. But (aside from some OS-imposed restrictions) you can basically put whatever text you want in a filename. You can have files without extensions, files with made-up extensions, files with multiple extensions, etc. And renaming a file and changing the extension has no effect on the data itself. It’s just that your OS has a list of extensions it knows and what it should do with files of that extension. When you try to open a file, the OS looks at the bit after the last period, says, “Do I know this type of file?” and if yes, it calls the appropriate program to open it. But that’s just something your OS does. And yes, some types of files also have special data at the beginning that say what kind of data it is. This is why you can rename a jpg picture to png and most programs will still open it. Your OS recognizes that it’s an image file (even if you’ve named it the wrong type of image file) and calls a program that opens images. That program reads the data and recognizes the special data at the start that says, “Hey, I’m a jpg image” and so it opens the image correctly, ignoring the fact that you named it png. Is there any downside to filing an extension? Remember, first and foremost, that "filing an extension" is an Extension of Time to File, and NOT an Extension of Time to Pay. April 5, 2025What's the point of extension if you still have to pay on the regular due date? How do you even know what your payment should be until you file?
If your business files a 1065 or 1120S, file an extension before March 15th. Then estimate what you might owe, pay it by April 15th, and file an extension of your personal return. When the returns are actually filed, the payments get settled up and you either owe more, or get a refund. Otherwise, everyone who owes would just file extensions so they didn't have to pay until almost the end of the year. More on reddit.com

File now to avoid failure to file penalties. Pay what you can with the return. You will them get penalized for failure to pay along with interest. You can set up a payment plan that lowers the interest, but payments are supposed to be made monthly. Failure to pay on an payment plan can result in the payment plan being canceled though. April 14, 2024 - All files are just lists of 1s and 0s, and it's all arbitrary how the data is encoded, but everyone agreed on one way to store PDF data so every computer can read it the same way. Same goes for exe files; they know to translate the binary into a list of instructions, whereas for a PDF they know to translate the binary into text and images and stuff. If you took an exe file and changed the extension to .pdf, you're lying to the computer about what the 1s and 0s represent and so it basically tries to translate using the wrong dictionary and gets nonsense results.
