Hi everybody.
Does anybody know of any coding projects I can pick up that are related to the field of finance? I've struggled to think of one myself to be honest, I barely know where to begin (e.g.: where to source data). A project that would require some SQL in there would be very handy!
This would just be something I could do in my spare time to build my skills. I intend to do this same project in VBA as well to hone my skills in that language as well since it is very well liked in the industry at the lower levels.

So I am applying for an internship sort of thing at my college where I would be paid to work on my own individual research project. Right now my best idea for a project is to make some sort of financial analysis tool that uses stock price forecasting, Bollinger Bands, and other metrics using a Bloomberg Terminal to give a user an optimal investment strategy. What are some other ideas for coding related finance projects?
I had this idea, maybe it's stupid but just hear me out. Much trading nowadays is automated using models of course. This year, new accounting regulation IFRS16 went live. That changes how you account for leases on your balance sheet. Now, fundamentally this changes nothing about the company, just from an accounting perspective the balance sheet's total assets go up and debt rates etc are changed.
I was curious, if some automated trading models used those rates and didn't reconfigure their models. It might change the stock prices of firms with lots of leases (e.g. supermarkets). Was going to do a small research project to found out if I could detect abnormal change for such stocks.
Maybe it's a stupid idea ( I don't work in hardcore finance, I'm just a consultant), but thought it was worth a try.

I am currently doing a programming course and have currently been tasked with consolidating what I know and building a new web app and due to my interest in finance I thought this would be a great place to look. I have a few ideas at the moment but none really seem to stick out as something people would use.
Also I am not looking to charge for this product and would actually prefer to offer it for free as long as people were using it (so I cant work on scaling). So if you have been looking for a certain service lately or had an idea you may think will work please post it below.
