r/macbookpro on Reddit: Trouble with Find My
January 5, 2024 -

Hello!

I want to share the location of my work laptop with my personal iPhone. The Apple IDs between the two devices are not the same. While I am able to share the position of my phone with the MacBook, the opposite is not true. On my phone, under the MacBook label I see "No location found". If I share the position of my MacBook through iMessage, it says "No Active Device Used For Your Location. You can check your settings in Find My.". However, all the location settings are turned on.

Sharing location across different Apple IDs can be tricky, and it seems you've encountered a common hurdle. Here's what you can try to troubleshoot the issue: 1)Double-check Location Settings: On your MacBook: Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Location Services. Make sure "Find My Mac" is enabled. Check if any other apps are using location services and granted permission, as they might be interfering. On your iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Ensure "Find My" is enabled and set to "Always" for maximum accuracy. 2)Sign Out and Sign In Again: Sign out of your iCloud account on both devices. Restart both devices. Sign back into your iCloud accounts on each device. 3)Enable Family Sharing: While it might not be your ideal solution, setting up Family Sharing can allow location sharing across different Apple IDs. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Family > Share My Location. Turn on Share My Location and invite your MacBook by its Apple ID (the same one used for Find My). Repeat the process on your MacBook by going to System Preferences > Family Sharing > Share My Location. 4)Verify Apple ID Location Sharing Settings: Go to https://www.icloud.com/settings on both your iPhone and MacBook web browser. Sign in with the relevant Apple ID. Go to "Manage Account" and then "Find My iPhone/iPad/Mac". Make sure "Send Last Location" is enabled for both devices.
