What is the purpose of these vertical, spaced-out bricks above the fireplace in my new house? If I light a fire, won’t the smoke just leak out of there? Google search didn’t come up with anything.
This post has been locked, as the question has been solved and a majority of new comments at this point are unhelpful and/or jokes. Thanks to all who attempted to find an answer. More on reddit.com

Is this chipped fire brick going to burn my house down?
I’m not an expert by any stretch, but I wouldn’t hesitate to send it in this fireplace… The bricks are there for thermal mass, AFAIK, and the iron box is there to keep the fire inside. 99% of the brick is there. 100% of the iron box is there. I doubt there is any meaningful performance degradation or safety concerns here. I’m interested in seeing some experts weigh in, though… More on reddit.com

I have an old fireplace insert. I was going to replace the brick but the chimney guys said the old one didn't need bricks. Can anyone verify? It's super janky looking right now.

I think you be better off posting this over on r/woodstoving

What's the Difference Between Common Brick & Firebrick? - St. Louis MO - English Sweep
September 11, 2023 - Firebrick’s superiority in handling temperature changes and extreme temperatures, coupled with its low thermal conductivity, makes it the right fit for these applications. In addition to these important heat-related properties, the smoother, less porous surfaces of firebrick help contain ashes, facilitating easier cleaning and maintenance – an added bonus! A well constructed, properly installed fireplace system is important because it leads to increased safety, efficiency, and longevity of the system – and therefore the entire home.
