r/Metalfoundry on Reddit: Firebricks for tractor supply in foundry
August 2, 2019 -
Want to kinda rig up a quick foundry without messing around with mixing plaster/cement, buying /painting kale wool waiting for it to dry - curing etc. Anyone every just try the cheap fire bricks at tractor supply https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/us-stove-single-firebrick?cm_mmc=SEM-_-Google-_-DynamicAdGroups-_-AllSiteTSCExtAd&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiY7QuO6K5gIV8pFbCh3NmgX2EAAYASAAEgIm6vD_BwE
Any reason these shouldn't be used or anyone have experience with them?

This looks like the dense type of firebrick, you want to use the "fluffy" kind for a foundry. The heavies absorb a LOT of heat before getting the crucible up to temp, while the fluffies reflect the heat better. It will work, but it will be very inefficient!

I wouldn't necessarily use them for a propane furnace, they're the dense firebricks, not the insulating type, so they would make a decent hot face because they are quite durable, but a little thick, so a bit of a heat sink. They'd have to heat up for a good while and use more gas starting from cold than a more insulating furnace. Maybe if you plan to be doing melt after melt on the same day most of the time, that wouldn't be so bad, because those bricks would hold the heat well between melts. I think they would be fine for a charcoal furnace though, just make a ring of them inside a steel bucket of some kind with an inch or two of perlite or maybe a sand and fireclay mix behind the bricks to seal up the gaps and add some thickness. Charcoal doesn't need a well insulated furnace nearly a much as propane. Heck, if you are burning free waste oil in your furnace then you could do the same thing and so what if you burn an extra quarter of a litre getting the furnace heated up when you're starting from cold?
