r/Cooking on Reddit: Question: Are fire bricks safe to use in ovens?
April 18, 2021 -
I was cleaning out a rental house and came across and old wood stove that was full of fire bricks to help with heat.
Would it be safe to use some of these in my oven to help even out the temps and get better results?
Top answer 1 of 3

Yes. Just don't cover any of the openings in the oven bottom. Also consider wrapping each brick in heavy-duty foil. You don't want to buy a new stove when you move out.

I do the same thing with my pizza stones in my electric oven. Helps keep the temp even and consistent. For me the problem is you don’t know if the bricks are “food grade” like what contaminants could have been out in them during manufacturing. Also you don’t know what things have been burned in that stove. You never new if the person burned plastics in there. Not that I know for certain that’s an issue but for these reasons I would just avoid it.

I am trying to keep my height down on the cooking surface and hearth for a certain design (aesthetic) look that i am going for so essential the top surface of the hearth can be sanded down with exposed stone and glass pieces etc, whereas the de...

Could you cook on a DIY BBQ made from Fire Bricks? | pink fish media
May 1, 2024 - Click to expand... I was thinking of just using the fire bricks to form the outside perimeter and base of the grill. It would still be open at the top. Basically just a lidless box made from fire-brick, full of charcoal, with a mesh grill on top. I may well cough up for the real thing eventually, but I'd need to be sure I would enjoy using this type of grill.
