Is there a difference in fire bricks.
There are as many kinds of firebrick as there are models of truck on the road. Different specifications for different jobs. Wood stove firebrick is actually not that great for gas forges. They are far too dense, being meant to store heat and radiate it slowly instead of insulating. Gas forges need insulation to work well, and either type of forge operates above the rated maximums of wood stove brick. But they do work well enough if that's what you got. For a gas forge, you really want kaowool type ceramic wool insulation. A little extra money spent here saves a fortune in fuel operating it. Just wear your PPE when handling this type of material, and encapsulate it in castable refractory to protect it from being disturbed. Coal and charcoal forges don't actually need insulation. With a decent firepot geometry, the fuel will self-insulate to form a ball of fire that reaches steel melting heat in the upper-middle while being cooler below and around the edges. Designs made entirely of steel or cast iron with no ceramics at all are totally viable. More on reddit.com

Brick Fire Pit Thoughts

I have a similar fire pit from Menards. Looks almost identical except the insert has a hinged grate.

Only been installed since April, but I've had no issues. Used it maybe 10 times so far this summer, pea gravel and all.

r/Blacksmith on Reddit: Fire Bricks melted
October 18, 2023 -

I bought new fire bricks after the last ones I had eventually blackened and got super brittle and crumbled, as I assume is normal. These just flat melted, you can see the one brick is black and glassy. I used two more bricks to block the back of the forge, same as I always do, and I was only using one burner. Is that a normal thing or am I doing something wrong with the forge?

Fire Pit - Project by Elizabeth at Menards®
I finally had the time to make my fire ring project a reality. First, I packed a foundation of sand. Next, I put the fire ring partially in the ground and surrounded it with retaining blocks and wall caps and glued them into place. I laid the bricks in my own design, surrounded by edgers.
