Why not just leave it bare earth? As you burn fires, you will likely have to clean out the ash at some point with a shovel. It seems to me that having rocks/sand in there would make that a harder job than it needs to be. More on reddit.com

I’ve been doing some research on this and I’m not sure what to choose. The diameter is 32 inches and it’s 5 inches deep. My original idea was to get 150 pounds of silica sand and use that to fill the hole to the top to protect the concrete. Then i intend on using lava rock on the top which I am still planning on doing.
I’m having second thought on silica sand because I’m reading that the dust is bad for your health. So other than silica sand, is regular sand a good option? Any other good options to use other than sand? Maybe topsoil or plan ole gravel? Draining is a concern as well. Every time it rains the whole pit fills with water. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I built a fire pit and at this point, all that I have left is to fill in the fire pit with either gravel, sand or rock, aka the surface for which I will be playing the wood on in the fire pit. I have done some research on what to place but I'm still a little confused as to what to actually place down. I saw a common material is play sand but the drawback with that is it does not drain well when it rains or snows and it needs replacement often.
I also saw that people use a gravel road base. Other people were saying you could use 3/4" granite or even lava stone.
I guess I'm just confused on what to use or what is the best option to use for the inside of the fire pit.
Side question: If a road base is a good option, would I want to use a breeze or would I want to use an explicit roadbase?

June 17, 2024 - I work for an Earthmoving Spare Parts/Wreckers, and following a request from my son for an outdoor fire for a small party he's having, I found an old Motor Grader wheel rim in our wrecking yard that makes a perfect structure for a fire pit. The rim is 25"/65cm diameter by 20"/50cm high and the steel is all around 20mm thick, so it won't rust away any time soon. The centre of the rim (where it mounts to the Grader's axle) is about halfway up, so the fire sits well above the ground and I welded a thick steel plate to cover the centre bore hole.
