First Time Building A Stone Fire Pit… Did I Make A Mistake Here?
I did a lot of (youtube) research before building my own firepit a few years ago. The gravel/paver base underneath the firepit itself is usually for drainage, so your firepit doesn't become flooded after a heavy rain. It's not needed, but it is a nice convenience. People also like to bury pavers underneath around the outside of the pit to help with the "stiletto effect" of chairs sinking through the ground, but depending on your chairs and how they distribute weight, this may not be needed either. Finally, if you have not locked in your firepit with mortar, and are open to a little more work, I would recommend looking into turning it into a smokeless firepit. There are a ton of videos on it on YouTube(I personally learned a lot from both Haxman and Fix This Build That, both of who have a bunch of firepit videos and you can learn a ton from all their experiments with making them.) Reducing smoke blowing around into people's faces is a huge quality of life improvement for any firepit. More on reddit.com

"Must not be getting air in your fire pit"

buy a moisture meter. before the seller unloads, take a piece and split it on the spot. check the moisture level on the newly exposed surface.

now here's the hard part: the wood is going to be too wet. and you're probably not going to find someone selling anything drier. especially in February of a pretty cold winter.

What are some campfire starting and maintaining tips? Everything I should know before hosting a campfire know it all.
Have all of your firewood prepared before starting your fire. Start with a pile of small shavings, pine needles, twigs, things that will burn easily. Build a teepee of finger thick sticks over the pile of kindling. Have larger two finger width sticks ready to put on the fire when the teepee is burning. Add larger pieces of wood one at a time until the fire is going nicely. Lay a split log on one side of the fire and put one or two more across the log, then one more across the one or two logs on the fire. That will burn nicely for quite a while. Have a long stick to use as a poker to keep the logs next to each other with an inch or so between them. You want to keep the fire in the middle of the coals that will form. Add wood as needed. Have fun! More on reddit.com
