Add google "web" search as search engine option - Mozilla Connect
October 5, 2024 - This can be obtained by adding udm=14 to the query string, like so: https://www.google.com/search?udm=14&q=<query> There doesn't seem to be a way to add default search engines, from comments online this is due to security considerations.

How to make Google the default search engine
Follow these steps to add Google to Firefox: Open about:config Create browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh as a new Boolean preference and set it to true Open about:preferences#search and scroll down to the list of built-in search engines Click on the Add button and type https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&client=firefox-b-d into the Engine URL field: example screenshot with another URL Scroll up and set it as your default search engine If you want it to use the "Web" tab by default (with no AI or snippets), add &udm=14 to the end of the URL. Is it really that bad to use google search on FF?
If you’re logged into a Google account (gmail, YouTube, etc.) then Google is watching. I’ve used DDG exclusively for years and never had a problem. People will say they get better results from Google but when I ask for specific examples, none or not many are given. I think people just don’t like change. More on reddit.com

r/firefox on Reddit: Why is Google the default search engine for Firefox?
September 30, 2022 -

If Firefox is supposed to be the browser devoted to users' privacy, why do they select Google as the default search engine for new installations of Firefox? I mean, it's easy to change, but Google is arguably the worst company out there when it comes to users' data.

(Rant over. I still love Firefox. Really, I do. It's just that as much as I love Firefox, I hate Google)

How come Firefox uses Google as default search engine? | Firefox Support Forum | Mozilla Support
Mozilla actually wanted to get away from Google being a default search engine in many Firefox locales that had it. In 2014 Yahoo was default search engine for many locales instead of Google. https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/11/19/promoting-choice-and-innovation-on-the-web/ In 2017 due to issues Mozilla was having with Yahoo they needed a new default search engine so Mozilla reluctantly went back to Google in place of Yahoo.

The method to do this has changed - this answer is how to do it in 2018. Read further down to see more recent answers

Add keywords to the address bar:

For example, you can set up your browser to search for bread at stackoverflow.com by simply typing so bread into the omnibar.

Do this by right-clicking on the search bar on the website you commonly search. You can do this for the Search field on any website.

Specifically:

  1. Go to the site you want to use to search
  2. Right-Click on the search box you fill out on their page (not Firefox's)
  3. Select "Add a keyword"
  4. Enter the keyword to use when you want to search in that site (eg: "so")

Actual answer:

@Kleinfrund's answer is valid but Firefox doesn't always recognize sites that support search. If the website doesn't show up using @Kleinfrund's method, continue reading.

  1. Go to Firefox Settings → Search. Or enter this in the address bar: about:preferences#search

  2. In the "Search Shortcuts" section you should notice a new "Add" button.

  3. Press the "Add" button and fill in the name, search engine url and a keyword (optional). The engine url should contain a %s in the url; Firefox replaces the %s with your search terms. An example of this is:

NOTE: For POST request configuration, press "Advanced" in the lower left corner of the pop-up.

  4. Go to the "Default Search Engine" section and select the engine you've just added.

If you're using firefox v139.x and below (ty @Fabian):

  1. Open a new tab and type this in the address bar:
  2. about:config
  3. In the search box type:
  4. browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh
  5. Click on the little + symbol on the right. This is what it should look like after you pressed it:
  6. Step 1-5

NOTE: POST requests are not supported for version 139.x and below. See bugzilla
