r/linuxquestions on Reddit: Zsh vs fish
October 14, 2020 -

What are the main differences between fish and zsh? I know that fish is not POSIX compliant, but are there any main differences? Also, what other shells are out their? Got any other recommendations?

Edit: I am looking for a bash replacement, not comments telling me to use bash.

*incomplete answer: I use fish because its fast and very easy/simple to configure, but mostly for the autosuggestion which I love. Wrong command:red, correct one:blue, and it shows you the most recent and most used commands as you type. After bash I tried zsh and after 30 min it made me look for something else.

Plenty of differences...if they are important or you is another matter ;)

Disclaimer: fish shell users so take it as biased.

  • scripting syntax: Fish has an almost sane syntax (okay, that's probably too much...maybe better "It's not a completely insane syntax"). zsh is close to bash there...so in my unimportant opinion completely unreadable. Yes, I know...it are shells so of course you can't expect a clean scripting language syntax but I rather deal with a "if...else...end" than "if...then...elseif...fi". And lets not even start about arrays/lists...

  • fish has no aliases only functions. zsh has aliases and functions. Personally I don't see the point of aliases at all...they are a subset of functions and their existence only make shells more complicated...but I guess a lot people like them.

  • fish shell has automatically generated tab-completions from man-pages. I learned to love this features...in bash or zsh you end up handling thousands of completion extension for all kinds of commands (probably there is some zsh extension to extract completions from manpages as well but as far as I know it's not there by default)

  • globbing of zsh (wildcard filematching) is more powerful than in fish. zsh really offers a lot there while fish is rather rudimentary

  • default configuration of zsh is...rather incomplete. Expect to spend some days on finding a good config for yourself and probably getting some extensions installed first. Fish tried to come with a pretty complete and default config so except maybe for increasing the history size and setting a PS prompt you like there aren't that many options you need to touch at the start.

  • keybindings follow different philosophies. zsh is more a traditional shell while fish aims to be interactive. So if you like stuff like sudo !! fish is not for you but you will feel at home in zsh. If you prefer <up><pos1>"sudo" for the same fish is the better choice. ( http://fishshell.com/docs/current/faq.html#why-doesn-t-history-substitution-etc-work )

In the end...try both and see what you like better. And of course only even think about trying another shell if you feel comfortable enough in bash...another shell is no substitution for bash knowledge which you will always need as most scripts are bash scripts.
