well not deep down but still. i actually think fiyero is underrated as a character but people downplaying his one truly shitty moment isn’t going to help him.
the engagement was pushed on him unknowingly but he’d been dating glinda for five years before that. yeah, yeah people don’t own other people and glinda certainly isn’t a flawless victim in this situation.
but this narrative that it was a mutually agreed upon PR relationship and that glinda shouldn’t be upset by him leading her on is crazy. it obviously wasn’t just for the crowds, they had a moment in private where he went along with everything. yknow what would have been valid and respectable? saying right there, “you just pressured me into an marriage i didn’t agree to. i’m not in love with you. we should break up.” but he said sure and walked down the aisle!
and i don’t think anything implied that he was being forced to be there. glinda is not nessa, and fiyero isn’t boq. what i will say is that glinda had no real right to be mad at elphaba considering their circumstances and current relationship. i think some people are defending fiyero to defend elphaba but they don’t have the same obligation and respect due to glinda in that situation.

My head canon, especially since the movie, is that after Fiyero saw Glinda after Defying Gravity he was greeted with an emotional wreck. He saw Glinda’s heart more than ever in that moment. They were both scared for Elphaba and missed her. They needed each other to get through Elphaba’s absence. But they had a fun bond before any of that. So I think they did care for each other beyond Elphaba, but that brought them closer. Was Fiyero in love with Glinda? No. But he had love for her! He cared about her. The new fandom belief that he hates her makes me so irritated. He grows frustrated with her, yes. But hate? Absolutely not.

There is an old interview from the first movie where Bailey said they are together because it “it made sense” like ‘she’s perfect, he’s perfect, they are perfect together’. But once he gets close to Elphaba he realizes he wants more than just an easy fun flirty relationship built on shallowness. Basically he outgrew her once he started “thinking” and it was his fault for not telling her that the relationship wasn’t working.

Glinda judges him superficially (i.e. what he is/represents; similar to possessing an object/trophy someone like her is supposed to have because of her, and both of their, status) Elphaba ends up judging him for who he is (though she does initially judge him superficially which is why she is cold to him at the start). It's very much like the theory of why King Edward VIII and Prince Harry both fell for the American divorcees they did (i.e. Wallis Simpson and Megan Markle). These women (having not grown up among the British nobility) could see past the Royal status of both men to who they were in ways that perhaps the other women they dated/were pursued by couldn't. Boq was a real surprise for me when I read the book, the musical seems like a downright character assassination after that. Also, agree on Fiyero, him and Elphaba make way more sense in the book, frankly they could've left out any romance between the two of them entirely in the musical, given that they were clearly trying to shift the story focus to the Elphaba/Glinda relationship. Tbh I thought almost every character seemed quite different in the book, to the point where "inspired by" occasionally seemed a more accurate descriptor of the relationship between the musical and book rather than "based on".
