r/wicked on Reddit: What is Fiyero’s character arc?
February 7, 2025 -

I’m just curous what others think. Noone seems to make any content about this yet.

For me, I think Fiyero repressed his nihilism by just never give an f ab life anymore, and go with the flow not thinking too hard ab anything. He was living a life that is meaningless, hedonistic, and fun but devoid of anything substantial. He is unhappy though, he just, well, doesn’t think about it. And I guess meeting Elphaba and seeing her passion and her strength, he got swept up in her cause and became a supporter. Before Elphie there is no indication that he cares about anything.

So I guess he found both love and meaning through supporting Elphaba.

Now 2 questions:

  1. Title, your opinon on what Fiyero’s arc is.

  2. Would Fiyero abandons everything (his title etc.) to help the Animals (he has Animal friends) if Elphaba never appears in his life?

I’m sorry in advance, I wrote a damn dissertation on Fiyero. We don’t know how they will expand Fiyeros arc in movie 2. We know they did, both Jon Chu & Jonny Bailey confirmed they did. Fiyero got as much time in movie 1 as he did in the whole musical. So how they will expand his character is speculation. Fiyeros story arc in the first movie/act is going from never being seen/depressed/honestly done with life to having his political awakening and personal awakening being Dr. Dillamond arrested and Elphaba seeing him in the woods. That day literally transformed his life. We do not know how they will continue to explore his relationship with Animals in movie 2. That’s not part of his story in the musical. His arc in the second act is becoming Elphabas ride or die. His politics in the second act is resisting the propaganda spread by the Wizard/Glinda/Moribble to becoming an enemy of the state along with Elphaba. From the moment he meets Elphaba, we see Fiyero is charming but perceptive. He clocks Elphabas defensiveness right away. He challenges her from the moment they meet. That pissed her off. No one has clocked her before. No one has cared enough to. In this scene we also see his connection with Feldspur (his horse). They joke around and they are clearly friends. Fiyeros only friend is a horse. Being popular does not mean you have true friends. We see that with Glinda too. She’s popular but her only friend is Elphaba. Both Jon Chu & Jonny Bailey have talked about how incredibly smart Fiyero is. Chu has said he is too smart for Oz and he’s pretty much just coasting through life. He gets himself kicked out of all these universities because he’s board and not challenged. Jonny has talked about how there is so much going on his head and he just doesn’t know what to do with it all. Fiyero is a man who is masking who he is. That is where we meet him in Dancing Through Life. Everyone, including the audience, is just swept up in his charm. Everyone is enamored with the Prince from Winkie Country who will flirt with everyone and encourages them to bend the rules and live a little. No one, including most of the audience, is actually listening to what he is saying in Dancing Through Life. In this moment his philosophy is nihilism. He is able to dance through life by pretending he doesn’t give a shit about anything. He makes himself the life of the party as it’s killing him. At the Ozdust ball he is so impressed and inspired by Elphaba when she dances alone and doesn’t give a shit what people think. You just see him watching her in absolute awe. She is who he aspires to be by the end of act/movie 1- someone who is true to themselves and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. Him recommending everyone go to the Ozdust is an important change from the musical. We see that Fiyero is willing to break the rules/do illegal things. The Ozdust is illegal and an underground club run by Animals. Him not caring about the legality of things will help him help Elphaba escape in act 2. It also gives him another connection to Animals, which is one thing him and Elphaba bond over. The defining 2 scenes in act/movie 1 for his character are the classroom scene when Dr. Dillamond is arrested and the scene in the forest with Elphaba. In the movie, Fiyero is the only other person who protests Dr. Dillamonds arrest. He does yell when Dr. Dillamond is grabbed. He is as distressed as Elphaba. He glares at the new professor to show his disapproval. Elphaba is talking to just Fiyero when she said “what are we going to do?” He just looks at her confused when he says “we.” Dudes most political act at this point is going to underground clubs. He’s no activist. Elphaba puts everyone to sleep but him. Unconsciously she knows he’ll be her partner in crime and that is part of the reason she has feelings for him. By this point they have known each other for a least a semester and she knows him. He jumps into action and grabs the cub. They work together to save the cub, as they will work together in act 2 to save Elphaba. In the forest, Elphaba forces him to confront the fact he cares deeply about the world and Animals. She makes him confront the fact he is so unhappy by pretending he’s self absorbed and shallow. This scene mirrors the first time they met. Fiyero clocked Elphabas defensiveness and called her out on it. In this scene she’s calling him out on his persona and depression. He gets ready to leave because he is also pissed. Neither of them like being called out. He is both scared that she truly sees him for who he is and he has feelings for him when she touches his face. His entire world is changed in all of a few hours. Jonny Bailey and Jon Chu talk about how this is the scene to unlocking Fiyeros character because Elphaba absolutely shatters his worldview by seeing him for who he is. This is not just a scene where they fall in love. This is the scene where Fiyero for the first time in his life is truly seen by another person and that scares the shit out of him. At the train station Glinda is whining he’s been thinking and is surprised he cared so much about that “old goat.” He is having an existential crisis. Elphaba is the only other person to know that crisis is about more than Dr. Dillamond. He did take what Dr. Dillamond said about no one telling them the whole truth. Him and Elphaba are the only characters able to resist the propaganda. Dr. Dillamond getting arrested was his political awakening. You see at the train scene he isn’t even amused by Glindas name change stunt. Honestly he looks embarrassed for her while Elphaba entertains her. He does get to share a short intimate moment with Elphaba where you see they both have feelings for each other. Skip this paragraph if you haven’t seen the musical. The second act starts with “Thank Goodness” where Fiyero is challenging Glinda. He actively tries to speak out against the propaganda being spread about Elphaba. Glinda tries to shut him up and does announce their engagement to finally shut him up. He has enough at this point and storms off. He confronts Glinda as she follows him. She tells us he’s been looking everywhere for Elphaba. He asks Glinda to leave with him and she says she can’t. She cannot resist everything the Wizard has done for her. He reminds her Elphaba could resist all of this. He is the captain of the guard but he is using that position to find Elphaba. We know he is working on the inside to find her so he can help keep her safe. He becomes an enemy of the state by threatening to shoot the Wizard. Him and Elphaba plan their escape from Oz at the end of the show. We do not know how they will incorporate his connection to Animals in movie 2 but it’s become a part of his character in movie 1. I personally hope we see him using his position as a guard to help combat the wizards propaganda. His story in act/movie 2 is similar to Phoebus in Hunchback of Notre Dame, which Schwartz also was the composer on with Alan Menken. Schwartz hinted at us getting the original ending of the musical where Elphaba and Fiyero leave to live with the Animals who also escaped Oz. So that would incorporate his connection to the Animals if that happened. His growth and political awakening in act/movie 1 allow him to become Elphabas ride or die/love interest in act/movie 2.

A Wicked Analysis: Fiyero | rectifying what should've been
June 14, 2017 - While first act Fiyero seemed to be incredibly confident, in a later part of the scene, you’ll see he’s actually scared. Because for the first time, he has something to lose. He uses this fear as a fuel. If he’s afraid of losing it, it’s worth fighting for. There is obviously some more plot points yet to come, but I hope this explains the majority of his character in Wickedly Queer and why I interpreted him the way I did.

January 8, 2025 - Some backstory on Fiyero’s “brainless” facade: In Wicked Part 1, the story did a really good job of building out Fiyero’s character development and making it feel like a pretty natural progression. That contrasts with the stage show, where his character development is quite rushed.

Who Is Jonathan Bailey's Character In Wicked? Fiyero Explained
January 14, 2025 - The musical is a very strict prequel that neatly ties into the original film, carefully forging characters and relationships that still make sense in the original context. They aim to explain certain aspects of The Wizard of Oz without changing anything about the original story, offering a new perspective on events that audiences are already familiar with. Fiyero is an obvious example of this, serving to explain why Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch.

r/wicked on Reddit: Fiyero in the musical and Fiyero in the movie are two different characters
April 8, 2025 -

This might be an unpopular opinion, as I don't really see anyone talk about this. But I recently saw Wicked on Broadway again with a friend who had never seen the musical or movie. She loved it so much that she wanted to watch the movie the next day which we did. Her favorite character in the musical was Fiyero but she was disappointed that the Fiyero in the movie is completely different, which I didn't realize before.

Basically, the movie completely cuts out the "frat boy" aspect of Fiyero's character. Think about the difference in their first scenes:

In the musical, he's asleep being ridden around in a carriage. He says "I'm sure I won't last longer at this school than at any of the others" and doesn't care at all that the carriage hit Elphaba, and just makes the offhand comment "maybe the driver saw green and thought it meant go."

In comparison, Movie Fiyero is much more dashing from the very first scene. He arrives on horseback (much more independent and strong than being taken asleep in a carriage) and is immediately fascinated by Elphaba.

Movie Fiyero does still teach the students how to have fun but he never really has that shallow "idgaf about anything" attitude. We're told in dancing through life that he's like this, but we never really see it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the movie doesn't even mention that he has a scandalous reputation and was kicked out of his previous schools.

To put it simply, Fiyero in the musical develops into the dashing, heroic character that he is by the end whereas movie Fiyero starts out that way. Fiyero's arc is supposed to be that he grows through with his relationship with Elphaba. He becomes fascinated with her slowly, rather than right away from the beginning. He goes from lazy and shallow to brave and righteous, finding Elphaba and standing by her side.

The movie has cut all of that short by having him start out that way. IMO, Fiyero's development/character arc won't hit the same in Part II as a result.

Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero Is Like the Christ of Wicked
November 19, 2025 - If you’ve never seen the stage show or haven’t yet put together the pieces (and spoiler-y marketing materials): By the end of Wicked, hunky romantic lead Fiyero is turned into one of the least sexy magical creatures imaginable, the Scarecrow. The twist is foreshadowed by simply making Fiyero a himbo and introducing the character with a whole song about being “brainless.” It’s foreshadowed further in the first Wicked film when Jonathan Bailey does some extremely gangly, noodly choreography in “Dancing Through Life.” But the mechanics of how this man transforms into a Scarecrow are revealed throughout Wicked like a very unlikely, probably sacrilegious, Ozian passion play.

r/Broadway on Reddit: [Wicked] Does the character of Fiyero have any coherency?
December 5, 2017 -

Before his physical arrival, the audience hear about him from Galinda and co.

Apparently, he got kicked out of a few schools before arriving at Shiz. He also seems well-known in Oz so he is something of a celebrity.

At the start, he runs down the main protagonist and doesn't even apologize, instead making a joke about her skin

This shows that he is rude and even bullying

Then 'dancing through life' happens, wherein he promises to corrupt students and boasts about how hedonistic he is. He then dates Glinda because she is pretty.

This reflects his shallowness and rebellious character.

Next interaction with Elphaba comes when he tells her that 'she does not have to change' when she becomes 'Galindafied'

This could show surprising depth as his line implies he finds her ok just the way she is. Or it shows his lighter, more friendly side as he could just be teasing Elphaba. This lines is strange as why would he talk to a girl he just ran over with his carriage and insulted?

Then comes the 'Lion Cub' scene when his character takes a 180 degree turn. During the scene, he helps Elphaba free the lion.

His actions here make him seem compassionate and brave, a far cry from all his previous actions, where he was essentially just a cissy party boy. This is hard to believe as he was so rude before and his actions before Shiz shows that he is more preoccupied with partying than anything. Why on earth does Fiyero even feel compassion for the lion cub, when all his previous actions indicate he is politically apathetic ?!

He arrives to see Elphaba off and confesses he has been thinking of that lion cub incident a lot. Galinda also reveals that he has become more distant and moody -- even contemplative.

Here his actions show that he has changed due to the incident. However, why should such a small incident change his whole perspective and outlook on life?! It's just so irrational.

After a time skip, Fiyero has joined the Gale Force and become Captain to find Elphaba. He then becomes engaged to Glinda, who at this point he obviously does not respect let alone love

I do not understand why he still sticks with Glinda after the time skip. He clearly does not respect her and is more preoccupied with looking for Elphaba. Also, since he held Elphaba in such high regard, how did he not blow his cover whenever anyone badmouthed her in front of him-- I'd have thought he'd defended Elphaba to the people who said bad things about her?! If he did defend her, then why did Morrible or Wizard not become suspicious of his loyalty for the enemy of OZ?

Fiyero runs off with Elphaba using a clever ruse

This shows that Fiyero has become more intelligent as he tricks his own men into leaving Elphaba alone. However, this also shows that he is impulsive and reckless, traits the audience has not seen before, except with the lion cub scene. Also, if he loved Elphaba for so long and supported Animal rights, then why did he not try to contact the resistance during his time in Gale Force? He could have acted as a double agent for the resistance, which could have led him to Elphaba quicker and helped the Animal rights cause. Also, joining the Gale Force would have been a bad move for an Animal Rights supporter as one of his tasks would have been to kill Animals.

As Long As You're Mine

This is where Fiyero reveals his love for Elphaba. This scene is very touching but does not make any logical sense. First of, why does he still love Elphaba after all this time? Secondly, how could he fall in romantic love with someone over just one moment of connection? Thirdly, this scene makes Fiyero sound like he is more preoccupied with Elphaba than Animal Rights. This makes no sense as the reason he even loved Elphaba in the first place was because of her kindness towards Animals. Does Fiyero even care about the Animals?

The rest of the play

After his heroic sacrifice, Fiyero is brutally tortured and then turned into a Scarecrow. At this point, why is he not traumatized and suffering from PTSD-- why as the Scarecrow he goes on a journey with Dorothy, Boq and the Lion he saved to 'kill' Elphaba? Why does he not just directly go to her? How he has not become insane from PTSD?

Somehow he hatches a plan to escape from Oz with Elphaba. WHY?!

I thought they both cared about Animal Rights and opposing the Wizard too much to suddenly leave Oz.

Where do they even go-- are there any lands they know of outside of Oz?

Also, why on earth does Fiyero even stick with Elphaba after he gets tortured and transformed into a Scarecrow?
