It is ultimately left to the reader of the novel to decide if the Scarecrow is actually Fiyero or not (Coincidentally, in the musical based on the novel, Fiyero is transformed into the Scarecrow by Elphaba to save his life).

January 8, 2025 - It captures the whimsy of the Land of Oz while portraying the themes of the musical (and Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked, to a degree) really well with excellent world-building and character development. Lots of content creators are already talking about Elphaba and Glinda and Nessarose and what they have going on, so I decided I want to talk about one of my favorite characters and his potential arc. Who am I talking about? Our beloved Winkie Prince, Fiyero!

In the musical, the Wicked Witch's castle belongs to Fiyero's family (they have a couple castles, and there's a joke about it when he's telling her to go there). He sends her there to hideout, I think after "As Long as You're Mine." It's called Kiamo Ko. Then, after "For Good," Chistery gives Elphaba a letter. They never explicitly explain the letter, but I always thought it was from Fiyero, giving her a warning they were coming and what the plan was for them to leave together at the end. I don't think he was a double agent, he was just going with Dorothy as an easy way to reunite with Elphie. More on reddit.com

Everyone’s characterization in the movie is more subtle. Fiyero still arrives at Shiz as a self-absorbed player who doesn’t take anything seriously. Jonathan Bailey just doesn’t play it as an over the top frat boy, he plays it as more of a handsome charismatic prince who’s coasting through life on his looks and charm. More on reddit.com

April 8, 2025(Musical) Why is it “not safe” for Glinda to know Fiyero and Elphaba is still alive?
Remember Elphaba also asked Glinda to not try to clear her name as it could make an enemy out of Glinda as well, and Elphaba viewed her as the last hope to overthrow the Wizard and potentially save the Animals. In Elphaba's mind, if Glinda knew that her or Fiyero were alive, Glinda may be tempted to try to clear Elphaba's name despite promising not to, just to be with her friend again. If Glinda thinks that she is dead, then there is no reason for Glinda to risk losing the influence she has. So it's not that she couldn't keep the secret of them being alive safe, it's that Glinda loneliness would tempt her to try to make it so she wouldn't have to keep it a secret (i.e. try clearing Elphaba's name). Hi, so I’m sorry if this is stupid question that’s been answered before, but since in the musical Fiyero becomes the scarecrow, was he technically a double agent? As in, was he helping Dorothy as well as Elphaba? I haven’t seen the musical in so so long, so if this is explained in the musical I’m very sorry, lol. Thanks!

The musical doesn't actually place Scarecrow with Dorothy. He's noticeably absent during March of the Witch Hunters. But considering he shows up after the melting scene, we can only assume he did travel with them. After all, he's taken out into the field by where Glinda sends Dorothy moments earlier. The movie is going to retcon it (retroactive continuity) to explicity place Fiyero with the group. We see that in the trailer with them all standing in the Oz chamber.

This might be an unpopular opinion, as I don't really see anyone talk about this. But I recently saw Wicked on Broadway again with a friend who had never seen the musical or movie. She loved it so much that she wanted to watch the movie the next day which we did. Her favorite character in the musical was Fiyero but she was disappointed that the Fiyero in the movie is completely different, which I didn't realize before.
Basically, the movie completely cuts out the "frat boy" aspect of Fiyero's character. Think about the difference in their first scenes:
In the musical, he's asleep being ridden around in a carriage. He says "I'm sure I won't last longer at this school than at any of the others" and doesn't care at all that the carriage hit Elphaba, and just makes the offhand comment "maybe the driver saw green and thought it meant go."
In comparison, Movie Fiyero is much more dashing from the very first scene. He arrives on horseback (much more independent and strong than being taken asleep in a carriage) and is immediately fascinated by Elphaba.
Movie Fiyero does still teach the students how to have fun but he never really has that shallow "idgaf about anything" attitude. We're told in dancing through life that he's like this, but we never really see it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the movie doesn't even mention that he has a scandalous reputation and was kicked out of his previous schools.
To put it simply, Fiyero in the musical develops into the dashing, heroic character that he is by the end whereas movie Fiyero starts out that way. Fiyero's arc is supposed to be that he grows through with his relationship with Elphaba. He becomes fascinated with her slowly, rather than right away from the beginning. He goes from lazy and shallow to brave and righteous, finding Elphaba and standing by her side.
The movie has cut all of that short by having him start out that way. IMO, Fiyero's development/character arc won't hit the same in Part II as a result.

In the movie, Fiyero does have the line to Glinda that he doubts he'll last longer at Shiz than his other schools (prompting her "but I wasn't at any of your other schools"). Other than his initial reaction to Elphaba being less dismissive, I don't see much of a difference. Between him saying it was the first time he was spurned by a girl, and then his immediate interest in Glinda, he still comes off as someone initially shallow.
