Hello,

I was wondering if anybody around ever "installed" flathub", and enabled flatpack on ununtu. I was wondering of it is super messy or not to have debs snaps and flatpack all at the same time. I want to install it, but I am a bit scared of how messy it could get. (I am on the last Ubuntu LTS)

Any advise, opinion is more then welcome

Flatpaks are nothing special, just a form of containerized installation. Snaps, in my opinion, have stronger containerization, so I prefer to use Snaps when possible. However, Flatpaks run smoothly in Ubuntu, and installing Flatpak and Flatpak apps on Ubuntu is easy to do: Step 1: Install Flatpak sudo apt install flatpak Step 2: Install the Flathub repository flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo Step 3: Restart At that point you can add apps using the manual install method, following the "flatpak install flathub " and "flatpak run " convention. By way of example, here are the commands to add and run Zoom: Install flatpak install flathub us.zoom.Zoom Run flatpak run us.zoom.Zoom The commands are available for each Flatpak by clicking the "down arrow" on the install button for that Flatpak. In short, nothing to it unless you are allergic to the command line.

I’ve just done that on a new install and it works flawlessly. The flathub site has good instructions for the installation. While you can use the GUI to manage installations, it’s quite easy to install and update from the terminal as well. Hope this helps!

Take Chrome, for example. FlatHub says it's "by Google", but also "Unverified" and "Not supported by Google". Then who is uploading / packaging it? Who am I trusting, if I use it?

I like the additional layer of security and control that bubblewrap / flatpak provide, but I don't like having to trust some (unknown, to me, as of this writing) third parties not to screw up or trojan the binaries...

Check the manifest, which you can find under the information tab on flathub. https://github.com/flathub/com.google.Chrome The manifest file will show you how the package is built including the sources and checksums. You can also report issues and check the commits/PR's on the same repo. but I don't like having to trust some (unknown, to me, as of this writing) third parties not to screw up or trojan the binaries... That's why it's nice that you don't have to. In case of verified applications, you are getting your updates from either the developer or someone the developer deemed responsible.

I like the additional layer of security and control that bubblewrap / flatpak provide Of note: the Flatpak distribution of Chrome actually patches out one layer of its sandbox with Zypak in order for it to work with Flatpak's own sandbox. I'm no security expert so I can't comment on whether this weakens/strengthens the sandboxing, but if your goal is to get the amount of sandboxing that Google ships (with the security that these big money corporations give), the Flatpak distribution of it is a no-go. The same actually applies to a lot of the Chromium/Electron applications shipped via Flatpak as well. They also use Zypak to modify Google's sandboxing. I come from an era that has the mantra "When it comes to security, if you aren't an expert, don't roll your own" drilled into my brain. It's for this reason that I stay far away from Flatpak distributions of Electron/Chromium/Chrome apps. I trust Google's Chromium team far more when it comes to sandboxing.
