How do I figure out the total thickness of a tile floor?
Thinset thickness should end up around half of the V notch or square notch trowel depth. I think U notch ends up around 1/3. More on reddit.com

What is the wall tiles calculation formula?
If you're tiling your wall, measure the length and width of the area in inches and multiply those numbers to get square inches. Then, divide your square inches by 144 to determine the square footage. Next, look at your tile package to see how many square feet each tile covers. Divide your area square footage by the tile square footage - the answer is how many tiles you need.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: How do I figure out the total thickness of a tile floor?
November 11, 2019 -

I'm trying to figure out how to calculate the total thickness of a tile floor. I'm thinking that if I want to make a smooth transition between my plank subfloor and 3/4 hardwood, I'm going to have to rip up the plank and put down a ply or OSB subfloor.

Hardiebacker
Subfloor = 5/8 or 23/32
Thinset = ?
Hardiebacker = 1/4
Thinset ?
Ceramic tile = 5/16

Ditra requirements:
Subfloor at least 5/8 ply or 19/32
Thinset = ?
Ditra = 1/8
Thinset ?
Ceramic tile = 5/16

Thinset tickness depends on the trowel you use right? How do you determine what that thickness is?

Edit: Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think it might be difficult to replace the plank subfloor since the joists run the same direction of the cabinets, and I'm not removing them. I'd have to leave some amount of plank from the cabinets to the first joist. The Ditra manual says that you have to use 1/2 ply over a plank subfloor. My local tile shop said 1/4 + 1/4 hardiebacker would be appropriate.
