Florida is a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which allows nurses to have one multistate license with the ability to practice in both their home state and other NLC states. As of early 2023, there are over 30 states participating in the NLC, including, but not limited to, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. Nurses with a Florida nursing license who wish to work in another compact state can do so without having to obtain an additional license in that state, provided they adhere to the laws governing nursing practice in the state where the patient is located.

Florida joined the Nursing Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018. This allowed nurses who are licensed and reside in one Compact state to practice in any of the other Compact states without having to obtain additional licenses, facilitating greater mobility and efficiency for nurses practicing in Florida and other Compact states.

The time it takes to get a compact RN license in Florida can vary depending on several factors, such as the completeness of the application and the background check processing time. On average, once all required documents and fees have been submitted, the processing time for a Florida compact RN license can range from a few weeks to a couple of months. To help expedite the process, applicants are encouraged to ensure all paperwork is completed accurately and in full before submission.
