Yeah, I wasted an hour on hold with that phone number before they just hung up on me. I called my local tax collector for advice and they insisted that I try the DMV portal staff number, which is (850) 617-3803. That was the number that eventually worked for my purposes. Context: Issue - I moved from FL to a new state. I updated my car insurance, but not my vehicle registration. The FL DMV sees that I own a FL vehicle without FL insurance, and they suspend my driving privileges. Subsequently, I updated my vehicle registration so that my vehicle is now registered and insured in the new state. The DMV portal did not offer me a method of lifting the suspension by way of updating their records for my new out of state registration and insurance. The only method of clearing the suspension that the portal offered was to ask me for proof of my renewed FL insurance. Since I moved out of Florida, that method of resolution was not appropriate nor viable for my situation. Goal- I wanted to contact customer service to help me update these out-of -state records electronically and lift the suspension. Incomplete (but potential) Resolution - The DMV portal staff number (850) 617-3803 worked for me, but only on my second try. On the first try, they redirected me to a different department, where I was given instructions on how to submit my documents via the “Email Us!” link on the DMV portal. I filled out all the fields on this page and attached the documents I thought were necessary. Apparently an insurance policy declaration page is not a valid proof of insurance, but there was no way of knowing that (you need to use a copy of your insurance ID card). This method might have solved my problem if I’d given it more time, but I got impatient when I didn’t receive any confirmation email. My Resolution - So I called the number again. This time, I wasn’t redirected to a different department because I asked her to not to. After explaining that I never received an issue ticket number nor confirmation email that my documents had been received by the DMV, the operator gave me her professional email and allowed me to send her my documents directly (this is where I learned that I needed to use an insurance ID card instead of a declaration page). So I sent a digital copy of the insurance ID card and a photo of my new vehicle registration in an email to her. She confirmed that she had received the documents and just a moment later, she told me that she had lifted the suspension on my driver’s license. She said that it may take up to 30 minutes before the change is reflected on the FL DMV portal, and that it may be about 48 hours before the national records are updated. Sure enough, within 30 minutes, the portal revealed that my suspension had been lifted. My Thoughts - Obviously the whole system is BS. It should’ve been much easier to find the customer service number (850) 617-3803. Relying on the Email Us! link would’ve wasted a lot more of my time, and I’m glad I called back when I didn’t get a confirmation email. My Suggestion - If your Issue is similar to mine, I suggest that you: Call (850) 617-3803. Ignore the automated messages until the automated voice asks for your drivers license number or SSN. Provide that information and wait a few minutes to be connected with an operator. Lie about having already been redirected to the secondary department, lie about having already submitted your documents via the “Email Us!” page of the DMV portal, and tell them you haven’t received a confirmation number or issue ticket. Pray to God that your operator is feeling generous enough to walk through the steps with you manually. If your operator insists on redirecting you regardless, then follow the instructions you are given, and perhaps that will eventually solve your problem. Remember to be kind and patient. The system is the enemy, not the phone operators. They deal with a lot of nasty attitudes and aren’t paid enough for the trouble. Politeness might determine whether or not you’re as lucky as I was. Good luck to any future troubleshooters. I hope this helps. Answer from JTLBlindman on reddit.com

r/DMV on Reddit: Florida DMV Phone - How to Talk to a Human? Busy Signal or Hangs Up on Me?
August 15, 2023 -

I'm calling the Florida DMV phone number 850-617-2000 - it's either busy or they literally just play a recorded message and hang up on me. Any suggestions on talking to a human?

@JTL Blindman you just saved my life I moved to California. My car was sitting in Florida, but I didn’t put insurance on the car because the car was coming here and I was selling it and then once I shipped to here I got the car here but literally they gave me a suspension and I paid the $250 that they gave me for the sanction and then two weeks later not even they suspended my license but then they taxed it up to $500, literally sat here thinking. How in the hell did I get another suspension so quick? I didn’t even have time to shop or do anything for insurance and then once I ship the car here and brought it to California they already suspended my license so you save me a lifetime because I just kept calling and calling and calling because I just applied for my license here in California and after failing the first time the written exam because obviously I took the test like I don’t know how many years ago, but I didn’t remember any of that stuff and just guessing I failed but then after studying and going back, I took it the first time and well didn’t do so great but the second time I passed the flying colors so I called that number listed. I had a really nice lady and she was able to help me get the sanction removed because I had already paid and now I am good, so I’m so happy thank you very much your lifesaver

license suspended in Florida after moving out of state, the DMV never answers phone calls.
I actually had this exact scenario happen to me and it was beyond frustrating. Here's what you need to do. You should be getting a letter in the mail explaining what has happened and what you can do about it. The two basic options are to get Florida insurance or surrender the FL plate. Getting FL insurance will cause you issues with your new state's DMV so that's not really an option. That means you're surrendering the plate. The easiest thing to do is go visit a FL DMV, but if you are far away like I was, this is not an option. Instead, you're going to mail back the FL license plate. Obviously, the car cannot be driven without a license plate on it, so if you haven't registered it in the new state, you need to work that out. Once that's done, you have to mail that back. You can visit this link https://www.flhsmv.gov/insurance/received-a-letter/ to see guidance from the state on what to do. Your letter will tell you exactly what your case is, but it sounds like https://www.flhsmv.gov/insurance/received-a-letter/fr700/ . This link gives the address to send the plate back to and says that your letter will specify how much you need to pay (money order recommended). For me, the amount was $150. Once your plate is received, they say it takes up to 10 business days to process. I sold my car so my process is a little different than yours, but I was able to get ahold of someone at the FL DMV who told me that if I contacted my insurance carrier and ask them to write a letter for me saying basically that I had sold the car on X date and fax that in, that they'd be able to clear the suspension on my license within 48 hours and waive and refund the reinstatement fee. This is obviously worth attempting. I see reference to a case number on the letter I still have a copy of, and I do not remember if I got this from the insurance company or the FL DMV, so you may need to actually speak with a human from the DMV or get that letter from the DMV to do this. I don't have the phone number I called anymore. For you, I would call your insurance and ask them to write a letter with your policy number, a case number if you can get one, and FL drivers license number, the vehicle make and model, the full vehicle VIN, and the effective dates of your FL insurance policy, stating that they have verified that your vehicle was registered with the new state on X date. Get a copy of your registration with the new state. Then write a letter of your own. Header is: Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles 2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS 98 Tallahassee, FL 32399 Sample text: To whom it may concern: state your case number, your name, driver's license number, VIN. Explain why your car is no longer insured, i.e. you registered it in state X on date X. You no longer reside in FL and no longer have an active vehicle registration in FL. Sign it and date it. The number I used to fax it a few years ago was 18506173985. You can fax via online services (trust me, I was also WTFing), just google "send fax online" and pick one. I don't know if they received my license or the fax first, but I do know that a few days after I sent that fax, my license was reinstated. You can check your license status here: https://services.flhsmv.gov/DLCheck/ Good luck! Edit: and if you're not at the same address, the letter may not find you, but you may be able to look up your account here and find the info you need: https://mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov/Home/en/Account/Landing More on reddit.com

How do I get in contact with someone at the FLHSMV?
If it's because you forgot to return your plate then it should just be paying a fine to get the suspension lifted. You can speed things up by going in person or sending someone on your behalf. It can also be sorted out through the mail. I don't know why they make it difficult but that's the way it is. More on reddit.com
