Foobar is usually for people who care after their library. Long time collectors of various file formats, the desire for them to be neatly organized, etc. Foobar2000 is a player that is very versatile, can play pretty much all formats, can look however you want, handles HUGE libraries effortlessly, supports replaygain, advanced metadata handling, scripted file operations, the possibilities are endless. That said, it demands some work and knowledge about these technologies, depending on what you want to accomplish. If you want to just listen to music, any player will do. If collecting, caring, and listening to music is a hobby, than, there's no better (to my knowledge) than foobar2000. Answer from wwphilQC on reddit.com

September 23, 2021 -

Not so much looking to be convinced, as you can be sure I am a Foobar2000 true believer after the last 10 or so years of enjoying this top-shelf music player. I went from Windows Media Player to Winamp to Mediamonkey (and maybe briefly tried a few other random things I cannot remember) and finally found my perfect music player and organizer to be Fb2k.

I'm mostly interested in hearing differing views on why /you/ have elected to use this niche player. For me, more than anything, I enjoy the ability to create my own tags and then use those tags for views, searching and organizing and just general information note-gathering about my favorite artists and songs. Secondly I love the wide range of plugins the community have developed and generously shared with us all. I really like the erector-set approach of building the player that works for me, discarding or ignoring what doesn't, and constantly getting a better user experience. Although it has been a long, slow process to get things how I want, and at times I have experienced some frustrations. (I've learned to make backups of setups before I go a'tinkering....)

I sometimes get FOMO, thinking I'm missing out on some new feature or killer component that would take my listening experience, song, and playlist managing to the next level -- and then I dive into the forums and the component lists (or this reddit) and try new things. Usually something new gets added that sticks. A lot of the time I add things and never really habituate to using them.

But, as I said, its all about the TAGS for me. I like that I can put in the Keyfinder -derived music Keys, Camelot Keys and Virtual DJ -derived keys (as the don't always agree, of course, and having all three helps me pinpoint what the key actually might be). I like using informational tags I've added like the Place an artist is associated with, Related projects of the artist, what Language(s) are used in the vocals, the characteristics of the Vocals (like masc, femme, duet, robotic, rap, spoken, and so on), the Publisher of the music, as well as things like what would be a good Occasion to play a song, what I might spontaneously imagine it would be cool to mix with (to be experimented with later when I'm looking for ideas--I search for my MixW tag). I have tags for an arbitrary description of Melody, Beat, Texture, Timbre, Dynamics and Quality (subjective description with pointers for eq settings, not just the bitrate or whatever). Recently I'm thinking about adding a Format tag, to describe what the tracks was taken from (Album, CD, Tape, Vinyl, Youtube Rip, and so on). That might help me upgrade stuff I really like, or for comparing when I have duplicate tracks.

Anyway, that's my story. Why do YOU love Foobar2000?

r/foobar2000 on Reddit: Foobar2000 - A Beginners Guide!
April 21, 2011 -

Foobar2000 is an extremely customizable and lightweight media player. You can customize it in any way you want. It can be far more powerful than iTunes, Winamp and MediaMonkey if you know how to use it. The problem is that it is fucking difficult to learn how to use. The learning curve is pretty much like a brick wall. This thread will hopefully introduce you to many of the basics.

They best way to explain foobar's possibilities is with a demonstration of my own foobar set up. Take a look: http://bit.ly/iUtPIB

Warning Foobar is not easy to use. It is unlike other media players that will work out the box. It will take some learning. This tutorial will take 20 minutes+ to complete, think of it as a cool project. The pay-off however is worth it; you will soon learn how awesome foobar actually is!

THE BASICS

STAGE 1 [INTRODUCTION]

  • Step 1: Download foobar: Go to http://www.foobar2000.org/download. I am using v1.1.6

  • Step 2: Install foobar: Make sure you check standard rather than portable instillation and that all the optional features are selected (some are unselected by default).

  • Step 3: Open foobar. A 'Quick Appearance Setup' window will open, select 'Album List + Properties'. This is a very basic layout.

  • Step 4: Importing your music: Click, File>Preferences>Media Library>Add, then select your media folder. It may take a few minutes for all the files to be added (depends how much music you have).

Once it has finished you should be left with something looking like this: http://bit.ly/mUkjtA

Over the next few stages you will learn how to customize things how you like and how to make the most of the software's awesome features.

STAGE 2 [CREATING A LAYOUT - THE HARD PART]

Foobar comes with its own set up customization tools. These are fine, although they are a little basic and many find them quite complicated to use. Nowadays most foobar uses opt instead to use a different customization system known a Columns UI. This system is far simpler to understand and has much greater support. We will be using Columns UI today.

Installing Columns UI

  • Step 1: ColumnsUI is a foobar component (you will hear more about these later). Download the component here: http://yuo.be/columns.php. I am using v0.3.8.8.

  • Step 2: Unrar and save 'foo_ui_columns.dll' anywhere on your PC (saving to desktop is easiest).

  • Step 3: In foobar open Preferences (hint: press Ctrl-P), click Components>Install, then find and select 'foo_ui_columns.dll'. Press Apply and then Restart.

  • Step 4: When foobar reopens select Columns UI from the list that appears.

  • Step 5: When asked if you want to choose a premade layout click Cancel. Learning how to make your own is important. I don't want to make things too easy.

  • Step 6: Open Preferences (Ctrl-P), click Columns UI.

  • Step 7: Under the tab 'Main', unselect 'Show Toolbars'. Under the 'Status Bar' tab unselect 'Show Status Pane'.

Your foobar should now look something like this: http://bit.ly/lwf3D4

Creating a layout

After each of the following steps make sure you observe the changes taking place (and click Apply if possible). Columns UI creates a layout by using horizontal and vertical splitters to divide up the window and then allows you to add panels (ie. playlists, filters, artwork so on) within each section you create.

  • Step 8: Select the 'Layout' tab. Click 'New', and title the layout what ever you like.

  • Step 9: You will find within the 'Layout' tab a box containing the words NG Playlist. It is within the box that we will create our layout.

  • Step 10: Right click 'NG Playlist' and select 'Change Base'. From the menu select 'Vertical Splitter'.

  • Step 11: Right click on 'Vertical Splitter' and select 'Insert Panel'. From the menu select 'Horizontal Splitter'. Do this three times to add three 'Horizontal Splitters' under the 'Vertical Splitter'.

  • Step 12: Right click on the first 'Horizontal Splitter' and insert 'Buttons', then 'Volume', then a 'Seekbar'.

  • Step 13: Right click on the second 'Horizontal Splitter' and insert three 'Filters'.

  • Step 14: Right click on the third 'Horizontal Splitter' and insert an 'NG Playlist'.

  • Step 15: Individually select each panel and splitter and ensure the box 'Show Caption' is unticked.

Sit back. You have created a basic foobar layout.

Your layout settings should look like this: http://bit.ly/mt3sjF

And foobar should look like this: http://bit.ly/k7YUU3

EXPERIMENT! Take some time and mess around with the settings. See if you can make your own layouts. If you are still having trouble then skip to the section below titled 'Layout Examples and Advice'. Try some of those out. Understanding how this works is by far the hardest part configuring foobar. See what you can make then move on to the next section. You have done well to come this far!! It gets more fun from here :D

STAGE 3 [COMPONENTS]

This is where it gets really cool. Out the box foobar is a very basic media player. Components are basically add ons that can add new functions to the player. There are some very cool components out there. Some components act as new panels that can be added using Columns UI, whilst others add more general functions. You install components in the same way we installed Columns UI - through the Preferences>Components. I will list some of my favourite components, what they do and links to download.

  • Quick Search Toolbar - foo_quicksearch - http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_quicksearch This basically search box that can be added as a panel allowing you to search your library.

  • Ipod Manager - foo_dop - http://yuo.be/ipod.php This allows you to sync foobar with your ipod/iphone/ipad.

  • Lyrics Grabber - foo_uie_lyrics2 - http://www.mediafire.com/?jyqoi5fht8b5z9h This will automatically pull lyrics down from the internet and display them in a panel as you play your music.

  • Biography Grabber - foo_uie_biography - http://www.mediafire.com/?zqytdtze21h#1 This will automatically pull down the artists biography from last.fm and display it in a panel.

  • Discogs Tagger - foo_discogs - http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_discogs This allows pulls down song and album tags from the internet. I find this very useful. Once installed right click on the songs you want to tag and select Tagging>Discogs. More on this later.

  • Windows 7 Shell Integration - foo_w7shell - http://wintense.com/plugins/foo_w7shell Click the link for details. This adds a cool effect when you hover over foobar in the W7 taskbar.

  • Audioscrobbler - foo_audioscrobbler - http://download.mp3tag.de/foo_audioscrobbler-1.4.7.zip Adds your plays to your Last.fm. Goto Preferences>Tools>Audioscrobbler to set it up once installed.

  • Waveform Seekbar - foo_wave_seek - http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_wave_seekbar This is the seekbar I use (see my setup at the top of this post). It looks good and is pretty useful as well.

EXPERIMENT - See what you like and try things out. There are literally thousands of Components available. These are just some of my favourites. A great source for Components is this link here: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components

LAYOUT EXAMPLES AND ADVICE

If you are having trouble with making a layout then give one of these examples a go. None of these examples use any components and are still rather basic. Try and understand what is happening as you put these together.

General Guidance Remember that splitters divide the window. The higher something is on the layout list the further to the left/or to the top of the screen it will be depending on the splitter that that is dividing it. MESS AROUND WITH THESE LAYOUTS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS! EXPERIMENT!

Long Columns Layout

  • Step 1: Goto Columns UI and set up the layout like this: http://bit.ly/ifO1df

  • Step 2: To change the filter types right click on the filter headers (ie. album, artist, genre) and select the filters you want from the drop down list.

  • When complete it should look something like this: http://bit.ly/lBu8rz

Itunes Layout

  • Step 1: Goto Columns UI and set up the layout like this: http://bit.ly/kPC07Y

  • Step 2: Goto Columns UI > Playlist View. Tick the box 'Display Artwork In Groups'

  • When complete it should look something like this: http://bit.ly/iiZgd0

Mr Lex's Custom Spectacular

  • Step 1: Goto Columns UI and set up the layout like this: http://bit.ly/ixXceh

  • Step 2: As shown in the above image, click on the final Horizontal Splitter and choose to rename it 'Filters'.

  • Step 3: To change the filter types right click on the filter headers (ie. album, artist, genre) and select the filters you want from the drop down list.

  • When complete it should look something like this: http://bit.ly/knLpU9

If you are still having trouble then ask in the comments and perhaps I or someone else can help you out.

I recently started listening to FLAC files and wanted a hi-res audio player for experiencing them fully, therefore I gave Foobar2000 a try. It sounds good enough but it has a a lot of problems due to which I just can't use it (music pausing randomly for a second every minute or so, themes just don't work for me). It's just too complicated to use. I used Groove Music on windows as it supports FLAC files, but wanted to know others' input on this, thanks!

I'm a really long time foobar2000 user, and I just found out that a new v2 has been released.

The thing is: I like it the way it is, everything is 100% working for me. So I'm worried about interface changes that would be disruptive. And I didn't find any documentation on the differences.

I'm considering just staying in v1.

So, what has changed?

I searched endlessly (read for about 5 minutes or so) for a good beginner's guide to Foobar. Didn't find one. What...what do I do with it? It seems pretty nice. Simple. Interesting. But I'm at a bit of a loss at what to do next. I've heard tale that it can manage iphone/ipod libraries, and that sounds nice.

iTunes sucks.

Wherever you heard about fb2k managing iPhones is woefully out of date. foo_dop hasn't been updated in years, and doesn't work unless you haven't updated iTunes since 2010, before iOS 5 came out. It needs the drivers that were out around that time; after that, the drivers changed and foo_dop didn't. As for getting started in foobar2000, welcome! I used to hop around different media players (Windows Media Player > Winamp > Zune software > fb2k) and when I was introduced to fb2k a few years back, I never looked back. It's actually one of the relatively few programs preventing me from using Linux full-time, because I love it so much. The most important thing about foobar2000 is how configurable everything is. There is a wealth of plugins to change how fb2k works or augment its appearance. Many people turn to an alternate UI setup like Columns UI, but I like the utilitarianism of the default UI . There are a couple things that enable this, namely Title Formatting Strings and Album List Queries. There are a couple help pages that come with foobar that explain these slightly, available on the Help menu under "Title formatting help" and by clicking the question mark button on the Album List search bar, respectively. But the first thing we need to so is go through the first launch layout setup. (I'm actually assuming you've been through this already, but if you want to adjust your color scheme to one of the default sets, it's available under View > Layout > Quick setup.) My selection started as the the layout "Album List + Properties (tabbed)" and the playlist layout "Separate Album & Artist Columns", but I've (obviously) added a few things from that. This is a good starting point for now. This separates the main view into two main areas. On the right are all the playlists that fb2k is keeping track of. On the left are two tabbed views; one gives a detailed view of whatever track(s) is/are selected in the current playlist. The other is the Album List, one of fb2k's powerful library navigation tools. It separates your library into a customizable hierarchy, represented by a tree view. My custom Album List shows the album artist, followed by their albums (sorted by year of release), then the discs and tracks. The part I was so proud of was making the disc tier only show up if the album had more than one disc. (I can show how to customize your Album List and give my config if you want!) Next, we need to tell foobar where our music is! By default, if you're on Windows 7, it will look in the folders that are on your Music Library (that's Windows's definition of Library, where it's a few folders that are lumped together). Otherwise, I'm not sure, but I think it'll at least find your user's My Music folder, or nowhere if you're on a portable install. (I think? I have a portable install on my work computer, but I forget how the default settings were.) If your music is in another folder, or if you want to change which folders fb2k scans for music, that option is available in the Preferences menu, under Media Library. (And the Preferences menu is available under File > Preferences, or by pressing Ctrl+P. Remember this, because lots of stuff is configured here. When I mention a menu path in the Preferences menu, I'm referring to the tree view on the left side. For example, Display > Default User Interface > Playlist View is where custom columns and grouping schemes for the playlist view are defined. But that's for later on. I'm all the way back in Media Library for the moment.) Here, at the top of the screen, is the list of which folders are being scanned and whether or not it's currently cataloging the contents of a given folder. You can add or remove folders using the buttons on the right. While we're here, there's a special playlist I like to keep around called Library Viewer Selection. This special playlist always shows whatever tracks are selected on the Album List; good for quickly checking the contents of an album. You can turn it on here by checking Enabled under the bottom heading. "Activate when changed" sets whether the view automatically changes to the Library Viewer Selection playlist when its contents change, like when you click something else in the Album List. I uncheck that option, personally. After you wait for fb2k to scan your music and create its library, you're basically set up. But I'm going to take you a bit farther and let you take a peek into some power-user options. Something that sets foobar2000 apart from other music players is that while it does keep track of a library, you don't view it all at once. In the Default UI (as I use it) the main way to look at your library is through the Album List. From here, you create playlists on the fly to listen to some selection at one time. However, an "everything playlist" is possible through creating an Autoplaylist. An Autoplaylist is somewhat like an iTunes Smart Playlist, but more flexible. It's created by searching through the Album List and telling fb2k to make a playlist out of some subset of the results. However, if we make an Autoplaylist when there is no search in the box, it will show whatever we selected. I take advantage of this by making an "All Music" playlist: In the Album List, make sure there's nothing in the search box, then right click the "All Music" heading at the top and select "Create Autoplaylist". A new playlist should be created called "All Music". This playlist is special because if you add new music to your library, it will automatically appear at the bottom of the playlist. Some more tips and tricks regarding playlists: You can easily create a new playlist by double-clicking an empty spot on the Playlist Tabs bar, or by right-clicking a playlist tab and selecting "Add new playlist". You can easily add things from the Album List by dragging a selection over to the playlist, or by right-clicking a heading in the Album List and selecting "Add to current playlist". Power User Tip: You can configure what happens when you double-click or middle-click a line in the Album List! In the Preferences menu, go to Media Library > Album List. The top table is where custom Album List hierarchies are put in; that requires an understanding of Title Formatting, and I'm running out of room here, so I'll avoid that for now. What we're after is the Actions heading, where there are two drop-down menus labeled with the two mouse button actions I mentioned earlier. Personally I make double-clicking "Send to current playlist" and middle-clicking "Add to current playlist". There's some terminology here that's good to keep straight. When you "send" a selection from the Album List to a playlist, it replaces the content of that playlist with your selection. "Adding" a selection appends your selected tracks to the end of the playlist. Both of these actions are disabled on Autoplaylists, so don't worry about losing your search playlist. This should be good to get you going. I encourage you to poke through the Preferences menu, see all the things that can be changed, and change things around! An important menu is Keyboard Shortcuts. Here, any menu item can be turned into a keyboard shortcut. Even things that act on a selected track can be made into a shortcut; there are different categories to work on the current selection, the current playlist, or the currently playing track. Even better, any keyboard shortcut can optionally be made global, meaning it will work even when fb2k isn't active. This is very helpful for playback commands like "Play/Pause", "Previous track", "Next track" or "Stop". Some more Power User Tips before I close off: In the Default UI, if you double-click the status bar on the bottom on the window, fb2k will jump to and select whatever track is playing at the current moment, changing selected playlists if necessary. I discovered this one a month or so ago, and I got excited when I found it! There are more commands available to be made into keyboard shortcuts than are in visible menus. For example, there's a command called "Activate" that pulls up the fb2k window, a "Hide" to minimize it, and "Activate or hide" that toggles between these depending on whether fb2k is the currently active window. Once again, I encourage you to read through it. Replay Gain is the greatest thing ever. You can have fb2k scan your music to see how loud it is, then it will offer to set some tags to make it lower the volume by the set value when playing that album or track. This fixes the "reach for the volume knob between tracks" problem and makes listening to disparate albums in sequence a breeze. The Playback screen in the Preferences menu has a lot of cool configuration options. First, it shows you how long this install of fb2k has been playing music. (For example, I'm closing in on 15 weeks of play time at home. This isn't even the whole count, since I've had a Windows reinstall on this computer and my work computer has a separate counter.) The series of checkboxes under the Other heading are what I'm after, though: "Save playback state..." is pretty much what it sounds like. With this checked, whenever you close fb2k, it will keep track of what song is playing and where you are in the track, so that when you relaunch, it'll pick up right where you left off. "Cursor follows playback" will change what track is selected when the playing track changes. Note that different playlists keep track of what is selected separately, and this won't change what playlist is selected if you're in a different one. "Playback follows cursor" will make the currently selected track play when the currently playing one finishes. Note that the cursor isn't the same as the current selection; the cursor has an extra box around it. Ack, out of room. I want to suggest some components, so that'll be another comment, I guess.

Vague question is vague. What do you want to do? What do you need to do? Here are some quick pointers though: Add music to your music library (File -> Preferences -> Media Library and then click the "add" button to browse to your music folders. If you use cue sheets make sure the .cue extension is removed from the "exclude" section. foo_dop is the component you need for ipod management. Don't ask me how to use it as I don't have an ipod. Play around with making your own layouts, go to view -> Layout -> Create scratchbox (you can add components as you see fit and mess around until you find something you like, then you go edit -> apply layout) Check out the components page to enhance the functionality of foobar. I recommend Facets, SimPlaylist and Waveform Seekbar. If all else fails check the forums and the wiki . Here is my current config

It's functional to the core. I was one of the fairly prevalent customisers a couple of years back when there was panels UI, and I made several pretty well known configs. Then the developer of panels got in a spat with the developers and support for panels got dropped entirely. It seemed like the end and then they released a version with an excellent standard UI. It isn't bling, but it works well and looks nice within windows. Much as I was disappointed that we couldn't do things like this any more, to show off our pretty desktop screenshots with modded XP visual styles, I'd since moved to 7 and realised that 99% of the time, the music player is hidden, the other 1% of the time you just want it to do things. Mine now looks like this and I couldn't be happier with it. If you think the default layout is boring, get some components such as facets UI and enable layout editing mode and make it how you want. Other reasons foobar2000 is good? Standards compliant ID3V4 tag support and support for custom tags from the outset. Excellent renaming support with some simple string functions to allow it to support whatever naming format you use already. I use %album artist%\%album%\%discnumber%%tracknumber%. %artist% - %title%. Immaculate handling of things like ALBUM ARTIST. Some great plugins like discogs tagging support. Any function is global hotkey-able with it's hotkey support. Fast, clean, as minimal as you want it to be. Inbuilt converter (depends on external DLLs) so you can upgrade your LAME if it gets better somehow. Lots of great components. foo_dumb is my favourite mod/med decoder out there (woo sample aliasing for pretty sounds). Completely customisable playlist and TAGZ is available across the board in any component. Customisable across the board generally. FAST I have 50,000+ tracks, and any search takes < 1 second. Doesn't lock up like lots of other things (like Songbird, WMP, iTunes). It's a great for people who like to have large, well organised collections, and want to be able to access and play them very quickly with no fuss, and customise to their specific needs.

Hello there,

I'm a ripened audio engineer and new to foobar and would like to use it to play back my local collection of music.

To me, having everything in one folder, especially when installing custom themes sounds less invasive than doing a standard installation and in case of failure having to manually delete things in various places.

So, probably asked many times but what are the critical downsides running it standalone?

I'd like to use it with my Lynx Aurora (n) converter btw.

Oh and also I'm on Windows 11.

How would you recommend installing Foobar 2000 on a Windows 11 system? In Standard or Portable? Would Portable cause issues with components such as ASIO interfaces? Having everything in one folder sounds enticing to me. Or is Standard more reliable since it probably ties into Window's registry?

I found this to be a good place to ask the question since Z has been using it forever but did a tutorial video a long time ago and I don't know how things might have changed till now especially with V2?
