French Numbers up to 1 Million, with Pronunciation | Lingvist
Numbers in French should be easy, right? After all, they’re written the same: you really just have to memorize 1–19 and then add 1–9 to 20 to make 21, 22, etc. right? Not quite. Far from being the universal language, the French number system is surprisingly complex. While French pronunciation is always a challenge for English speakers, certain numbers also have some implicit math within the name, meaning a simple two-digit number can end up being a whopping eighteen letters (and three dashes) long.

r/learnfrench on Reddit: How to pronounce numbers in French?
August 28, 2023 -
Recently I was learning the numbers in French by myself and I got confused with pronunciation. For example, someone was pronouncing the "vingt-deux" like there was an "e" letter between, and the other one not. Another example, "trente-trois", they again pronounced it like there was an "e" letter between, so they said "trente e trois", and I really got confused with that. Could someone explain me how to actually pronounce them?

That's a great question, and it goes a bit further than numbers. You may have been taught that -e at the end of a word is silent unless it is the only vowel in that word. This is only approximately correct, but in reality it can be pronounced depending mostly on register: in standard formal speech, these -e's are silent unless a word follows them that starts in a consonant, and not pronouncing the e would result in too many consonants clustering together. For example, in formal speech the e's in "notre maison" and "cartable rouge" because "trm" and "blr" sequences are not allowed in French phonology. By contrast, informal speech tends to avoid these pronounced e's whenever possible, and may resort to deleting consonants for that purpose (this is more region dependent for instance southern French accents famously use more pronounced e's than a typical Paris accent). So you could hear things like "not' maison" and "cartab' rouge". Lastly, in standard poetry word final -e's are virtually always considered pronounced and count as syllables in the meter. Based on this, numerals like "trente-deux" have two main ways of beign pronounced, a more formal one with a pronounced e to separate the t and d, and a more informal one where the t and d collide and partially merge (though they are still distinct from a single d: they form a geminate consonant that's held longer than a single d). Vingt follows the same rule even though it doesn't have an e at the end, probably by analogy with trente, quarante, and the rest of the multiples of ten. So here's the pronunciation of numbers 20 to 29, with broad transcriptions in slashes, and a narrow transcription in brackets (representing how I personally say them informally: note that this is region dependent and even context dependent - don't hesitate to look for spoken samples on places like Forvo). 20 /vɛ̃/ [væ̃] 21 /vɛ̃.te.œ̃/ [væ̃.te.æ̃] 22 /vɛ̃.tə.dø/ (formal), /vɛ̃t.dø/ [væ̃n.dø] (informal) 23 /vɛ̃.tə.tʁwa/ (formal), /vɛ̃t.tʁwa/ [væ̃n.tχʷa] (informal) 24 /vɛ̃.tə.katʁ/ (formal), /vɛ̃t.kat(ʁ)/ [væ̃t.cat(χ)] or [væ̃n.cat(χ)] or [væ̃ŋ.cat(χ)] (informal) 25 /vɛ̃t.sɛ̃k/ [væ̃.t͜sæ̃c] 26 /vɛ̃t.sis/ [væ̃.t͜sis] 27 /vɛ̃t.sɛt/ [væ̃.t͜sɛt] 28 /vɛ̃.tɥit/ [væ̃.tɥit] 29 /vɛ̃t.nœf/ [væ̃t̚.nœf]

Depends where the speaker's from. Some accents tend to pronounce every syllables when others soften some. Like, for 20 "vingt" some people will pronounce "vin" while some (I do) are going for "vinte". Phonetic alphabet: \vɛ̃\ or \vɛ̃t\ Maybe it's better to stick to one accent. Wiktionary has a pretty useful database regarding words and pronunciations.
