Is there a decent audio recording software thats free?
I was never comfortable with Audacity, either but it's pretty solid. I became familiar with it in my teens and it definitely took getting used to.
Overall, I think a good start is Audacity. It's in every book I have for VO and VA work and it's a solid program. I would suggest using it a little while longer. There's a few things you can use for shortcut keys, too. Grab something like a gaming keyboard to assign shortcut keys to your program functions. I had one but tossed it for whatever reason. I guess it was obsolete but it worked with PhotoShop and Audacity.
The industry standard is Adobe Audition but that's a monthly pricepoint you're going to have to reach and negotiate with Adobe for.
There's a few like Cockos Reaper which is solid, but GarageBand, Studio One and Pro Tools which are basically the same. When your work gets down to working with editing software, it's all about preference. So long as your software can output at the desired quality and format for your employer.
