If you didn't already know, you can get FREE boxes from the USPS store!
This is all well and good but flat rate boxes are only good for small dense items. You could end up paying more to ship via flat rate than if you use your own box and pick the shipping that's most relevant to your needs. More on reddit.com

Unintentional (ignorant) misuse of free USPS shipping supplies. Am I screwed?
The boxes are free for SHIPPING. The USPS does not give away cardboard for free unless it is going to get paid to then move those boxes. Your carrier was correct, the clerk is lazy and doesn't gaf. Where ever you found this cute little "life hack", you should go back and comment that this is illegal. P.S. Unless it's a slow day at Revenue Protection, you'll probably not be approached, but don't perpetuate this myth that we give away free boxes for free. More on reddit.com

If boxes on USPS.com are free, why do eBay sellers buy boxes, instead of just using USPS boxes?
Because the 'free' boxes require you to use USPS Priority Mail service and pay that rate. In many cases, other USPS services like "Ground Advantage" or "Media Mail" (along with other shippers like UPS and FedEx) are cheaper even though you have to use your own box (even factoring in the cost of a box). But when Priority Mail is the cheapest option anyway (or if you want to offer Priority Mail service for the perceived value of faster-shipping to the customer) then using the free boxes makes sense. Just wanted to let others know since I used to have difficulty with having boxes to ship my products with.

It takes around 3 days for them to deliver the boxes, and they're completely free! Some offices also may allow you to pick them up in-store, but you'd have to check out in person since calling doesn't seem to do any good.

September 23, 2025 - These companies often recycle or donate their old boxes, so you can reach out to them and ask to pick up boxes for free. Taking advantage of flat rate shipping materials is a great way to secure free supplies, but also minimize shipping costs. Flat rate shipping can help keep shipping costs low because the price for shipping is not related to the package’s weight or size. USPS and UPS have flat rate envelopes and flat rate boxes available in various sizes.
