Is there a way to get a completely free domain that doesn’t add anything to the webpage when accessed?
I tried No-IP, but when I enable "mask URL," it adds an ugly frame to the end of the webpage, which I don’t want.
So, is there any way to get one? I don’t mind if the URL ends up being random.
[EDIT] :: I ended up going with OVHCloud. They have a very low domain order price and the renewal is also very cheap.
[EDIT 2] :: After OVHCloud denied access to my account (I just couldn't log in), I went with namecheap and got myself a .net domain. Additionally I registered a few .eu.org domains from nic.eu.org
Howdy r/selfhosted community!
I'm looking for a cheap / free domain name registrar. Here is a list of registrars I DON'T want to use:- Namecheap (I just personally don't like them. You can try selling me to them.) Read edit, Google Domains (Not available in my country.), Domain ORG (They aren't really cheap plus they offer useless services with the domain), Freenom (Currently doesn't work. It doesn't work for about 4 months now), MyGA, dotTK or any other Freenom API powered registrars. (Since freenom doesn't work), Free / paid subdomains (I'm looking for a domain which I am fully in control of.)
Keep in mind I only want the domain! No protection, certificate, hosting or any other service provided by the registrar. I HAVE a server at home and don't need any hosting. I know that GitHub offers subdomains but as I said earlier, no no. I also want to be in full control of the domain. By full I mean complete control over anything related with the domain.
Basically, I want to be able to set the nameservers to Cloudflare and control it there. My budget (currently) is: 1€/month or 10€/year | 1.06USD/month or 10.58USD/year
Thanks in advance. Happy selfhosting :)
<FULL DISCLOSURE> I am a newby when it comes to anything web design related but I am learning. I don't quite understand the concepts of things like a domain name, subdomain, website hosting, etc. But I am still in the infant stage of creating a new business with very limited funds. The fact of the matter is I need a business website with a domain or possibly a subdomain registered. Is there any truly FREE options for this? I am quite sure that the premium version of this same thing comes with many useful features and most will encourage me to go ahead and spend the money to get it but I simply do not have the funds for this. Not today. I fully intend to upgrade to the premium as soon as there is a profit from my business but right now there simply is no room in the very limited budget for this particular thing. Any advice/suggestions on this matter are openly welcomed. If anyone has a little time to chat about it feel free to message me if you prefer. Thanks in advance for your help
Is there any free and reliable way to get a domain name, I figured that I would host my website with github pages but I can't figure out how to get a custom url for my website, I'm sure theres a simple answer that I'm somehow missing.
Edit: I now have the free domain @ www.lixxxeyslagoon.tk, check it out in the future if you'd like and dm me with bits of advice while I learn git and github
Merhaba,
I would like to get a free domain. I don't really care about the ending.
I just want not to be registered under another provider (so no subdomain), i.e. I don't want a domain like nameformywebsite.provider.com but simply nameformywebsite.com (or .to, .info,...).
Does anyone know more about this? Experiences?
Back in 2020 obtained a free .ml domain from freenom, and it worked really well. I just went to sue freenom again and found that it, along with dot.tk is now defunct.
Listen, I get that lots of people say that i am being cheap an i should just buy one from cloudflare or name cheap for a few bucks, but i dont want to hear from those people. I simply want to know if there is any currently functioning alternativelys to freenom that will provide you with a completely free domain nme without need for a payment method,
THX,
Milo
There is a way to get a free domain really for free? And that dont have any thing in the web when accessed?
I try noip, but, if i put "enable mask url" then noip put a horrible frame at the end of the webpage. I dont want that.
So, there is a way to get one? i dont matter if the url is afjhdalsfjhdslajkf.fdsafjañ.tk
or whatever.
I honestly don't really care what the domain's gonna be, just want to host a free site for my hobby
Edit: Freenom doesn't work at all. Shows everything as not available, even something like djksnsbsbhhhbbb666688 Same thing with .tk Any other options you know about?
Thanks in advance
If possible, how do you get it?
When you register a domain name at a website, what actually happens? Is your site stored in their server? Where is your site stored?
yes, you can get .me domain for year for free - https://education.github.com/pack
Your site and your domain name are two different things. Your site is the files that are stored on a server and sent to the user whenever they request them. These servers don't actually advertise what the domain is though and most have actual internet addresses like 928.11.11.102 Think of that like your physical address. However, no one can remember that server address and so we created domain names. They are stored in domain servers. When a user puts google.com in their browser, it first checks with a domain server and says "where is this domain stored?" The domain server responds by saying the server address and the browser redirects to find the files stored there. So think of that like a phone number. You don't have to remember the physical address of a house to call it, just the phone number and a switchboard (DNS server) redirects your phone call to the physical address. When you buy a domain, you've reserved the "phone number", but you need to tell it where your address (hosting server) is so it can redirect users to the host. Most hosting solutions offer free domain registration since the solution is almost worthless without a domain.
Edit: oh and to answer the topic. There's no such thing as getting an off the shelf free domain name registration that I've ever heard of. It usually costs like $5-$20 per year depending on what kind of domain it is.
The name itself could be completely gibberish, but I'd like a real "playground" where I can improve my coding skills!
EDIT: I've followed your combination of advice and got a free .tk domain and used 000webhost to host it. Everything should go smoothly, but 000webhost is having some internal issues at the moment. Either way, thank you all!
EDIT 2: With 000webhost down (and seeing bad things about this company), I followed up with Netlify and... my first website is up!
Netlify, GitHub Pages, Heroku, Firebase...
There are options for free domains available as well, such as freenom.com which allow the option for free .tk domains (as well as others too I believe). Great for a playground. PLENTY if guides on Google for installing and setting up personal web server, with SSL and more. Plus it's fun.
So, freenom's dead. Are there any alternatives?
We're using Google Firebase, if that means anything. (does firebase offer that? I'll feel pretty dumb if they do lol)
Thank you in advance
Folks,
I'm faced with the task of getting a domain name for a hobby web project which is GPLv3.
I'm obviously not going to actually buy a new domain since its a hobby project, so I'm thinking of getting one for free. I understand the risks (like we don't truly own the name, the registrar can shut down any time, the registrar can even monetize our domain once they start getting popular, etc.)
But still, even considering all those risks, my research yielded that the below registrars provide domain names (or short 2nd level subdomains) for free. Now can someone experienced here say which one of these come with the least risk?
-
.tk, ga, gq, ml (freenom.com registrar).
-
.Eu.org
-
.cu.cc
-
.cu.vu
-
.biz.ly
-
.eu.mn
-
.com.co.in
I'm obviously not going to actually buy a new domain since its a hobby project
Why not? A .org is $10, .xyz is a dollar, .info is $3, .online is $5...
Today you can buy a .xyz for only 22cents. Domains are getting cheaper and cheaper. if you really want the best deal you can check out Domcomp
I know they probably don't exist but l litteraly have 37 cents right now.
I heard that Freenom is down, so how can i get free domain?
Sorry if this isnt the right place to ask these questions, i am not asking for freebies or anything like that I just want to learn how to set up a web domain to a host for free.
Lately i learned how to make a website with HTML,CSS,JS,Bootsrap and etc, but now i want to learn Php and mySQL, but to do so i need to actually set up a site with a server and ftp, so i just want to know if anyone can point me in the right direction where i can find a free domain name or subdomain name if that works and a free host so i can practice and learn.
Thanks in anticipation.
P.S. : I do not post often on any subreddit and i apologize if i broke some of the rules of this /r/. Thanks.
Hey Reddit, I’m on the lookout for the best free domain deals.
I recently came across a deal offering a free .COM domain, but there’s a slight catch. You need to purchase hosting from the provider (which is pretty affordable).
Whether it’s from popular registrars offering first-year discounts, promotions tied to hosting packages, or any other hack you’ve come across, I’d love to hear your recommendations! 🙌
