The bigger question is: Are there any tools at all that return solid keyword data? Pick a keyword and enter it into ahrefs, SEMRush, MOZ, Google keyword planner, GSA, etc... all of the data is different. Look at the competition level for each keyword... it is all different. People invest thousands of dollars on marketing keywords from data that is not even close to accurate. Screw keywords... spend your time understanding the Google Category for your page and boosting the Confidence Score with better Entities, LSI and Variations to prove that your page understands a bigger concept and can provide a solution to a search query. Rank for 200+ keywords instead of focusing on a single word. Answer from DanielODonnell on reddit.com

Hello guys! I've been reading this sub for a long time now and decided to finally start! However, I've been struggling with the keyword research, mainly because all the good tools are paid: Moz, Semrush, Ahrefs. I don't have the money to spend on these tools right now, so I was wondering if there's any good tool that I could use for free. I've seen some Chrome extensions that do provide some info on keywords, but I'm not quite sure if they're as reliable as the famous ones. Is there any good free option? Thanks.

(Sorry for any english mistakes, I'm not native)

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to SEO. Since I'll be working as a content writer soon (no business/website/topic selected yet) I want to practice and use a good free keyword oriented tool. Would be very appreciative if some of you kind members of this community help me out! 😁

(Quick note: Google Keyword Planner is a nightmare to set up but am trying)

Thank you so much.

Edit: Just fyi, I do have some (a bit of) keyword knowledge. I know about short-tail, long-tail and LSI keywords. I've also read and watched course videos about good practices and things to avoid while using keywords, but any good knowledge (even if I might have a basic idea of it) is welcome!! Give me tips if you can along with the tool recommendations! Thank you so much, cheers.

r/Entrepreneur on Reddit: Here's a list of 14 free keyword research tools you can use for SEO, market research, content topic ideas, etc.
August 24, 2017 -

Hey guys!

One of my clients put together a blog post about free keyword research tools a while back.

I keep chickening out of sharing it here, but I feel like this community really would find a lot of value in it. It's been quite helpful for me, personally.

I suggested a couple of the tools that made it onto the list, including the SEOBook keyword tool and KeywordShitter. I also compiled a research document for him detailing what kind of content was already out there on this topic, for "skyscraper technique" purposes.

Here's a link to the blog post, but don't worry, you'll find a TL;DR and full list of the tools below.

The tools are divided into three broad categories:

  • Keyword research tools that give data about things like search volume. (E.g. the SEOBook Keyword Research Tool.)

  • Longtail keyword tools that don't give said data, and which generally draw from Google Suggest. (E.g. KeywordShitter)

  • Tools that are a little different and unique, but still relevant for this list. (E.g. Answer the Public.)

Some of these are 100% free. Others are paid but affordable, and/or have a free trial you can use.

In the blog post, he's also compared the search volume and other data from these free tools with info for the same keywords generated by SEMRush, which his agency uses. For the most part, there weren't any substantial discrepancies.

Here's the full list of tools.

Tools that give detailed info (search volume, etc.)

  • SEOBook.. I stumbled across this guy's blog one day, and it's a fascinating read. He's quite critical of Google, and not exactly optimistic about the future of SEO. I recommend checking it out. I binge read all his content one evening, and that's pretty rare for me. The keyword tool is free, with a free account.

  • Serps.com Keyword Tool. This is another good one. It's a free trial for a paid tool, but iirc, it's quite affordable if you decide on a paid subscription.

  • KW Finder. This is another affordable paid tool with a free subscription. Charlie actually uses this one regularly at Finetune Digital. I do too, and I'd recommend it.

  • SEMRush Free Trial. This link takes you to a free 14 day trial of SEMRush. (This is another tool Charlie uses regularly.) It's only a 2-week trial, but worth considering if you're laying the groundwork for a new site, and you can get what you need within that time frame.

  • Moz Keyword Explorer Free Trial. To be quite frank, I haven't heard much that's positive about Moz from SEO pros. It's not really considered the best SaaS in its class, but you can do up to three searches a day (iirc) using their Keyword Explorer. (Side note: Moz is the very portrait of content marketing done right. If you're implementing content marketing strategies yourself, take a look "between the lines" at what they're doing.)

Tools that generate longtail keywords, usually by way of Google Suggest.

  • KeywordShitter. This was created by a Redditor, and I love its simplicity. Don't let the minimalistic interface fool you -- it's actually quite a useful tool. I've used it in the past to come up with blog post ideas for clients in industries where, once you've covered the basics, it's surprisingly challenging to come up with content topics. (Notably a moving company.)

  • Keyword.io. This works similarly to KeywordShitter. I've also found it useful for finding fresh content ideas based on longtail searches.

  • UberSuggest. Recently acquired by Neil Patel, this one generates a nifty word cloud, in addition to a beefy list of longtail keywords.

  • KeywordTool.io. Similar to both of the above, also useful.

  • WordstreamKeyword Tool. You can search for free, but it fuzzes out the search volume and other data unless you've got a paid subscription.

  • Longtail Pro 7 Day Trial ($1). It's not free per se, but at $1, it may as well be. I've never used it myself, but I've heard good things about it.

Tools that do something a little bit different.

These tools are great for market research. I use Answer the People on a regular basis.

  • Answer the Public. This is actually a pretty badass tool for finding common questions your target audience is asking. It focuses on two types of searches: those in question form (who, what, why, etc.), and those beginning with prepositions (on, around, without, etc.). It generates a cool visual chart, as well as a big list of common searches.

  • Bulk Keyword Generator. This one is unique in that it focuses specifically on keyword research for local service businesses. (Think plumbers, landscapers, etc.)

  • FAQ Fox. This one scrapes Reddit and Quora for questions and discussions.

So, that's the list. Again, I figured I'd share it here because it seems like the kind of thing people here would be into. My apologies to the mods and the community if this is considered self-promotion, as I know the guy that wrote this.

Hi guys,

I'm a content writer, working at a marketing company. I'm fairly new to the field and I'm writing content for the company - landing page content, product descriptions etc. My job is to write content for various brands that have collaborated with us. I do the creative part, but keyword research, search volume, ads are done by the Performance Marketer. These keywords are then passed on to me in integrate in my writing.

I am quite good at content but I want to upskil myself technically, as content and SEO go hand in hand. I want to prep for my next job (my contract ends in 2months). I have completed a course on SEO by Hubspot, and learnt my basics -keyword research, technical SEO, backlinking, On page SEO. Now, I want to implement my learnings starting with keyword research.

I tried using Google Keyword Planner (I was told it's free), However I have to pay Rs 12/day to complete my sign in.

  1. Suggest me a Keyword research tools that is actually FREE

  2. Also suggest how I can move forward to actually implement my learnings for my next job.

  3. Which skills are the most important if I'm applying for a content writing/ SEO content writing job?

Google Keyword Planner is technically free but they basically force you to run ads to get decent data, which is bullshit. The search volumes they show without an active campaign are ranges like "100-1k" instead of actual numbers. For actually free keyword research, use Answer the Public and Keywords Everywhere browser extension. Answer the Public shows you questions people are asking around your topics, which is gold for content ideas. Keywords Everywhere gives you search volumes right in Google search results for free up to a certain limit. Ubersuggest gives you 3 free searches per day without signing up, and their keyword suggestions are decent for content planning. Just don't rely on their difficulty scores too heavily. Google Search Console is completely free if you're working on websites you have access to. Shows you exactly what keywords are already driving traffic and which ones you're ranking for but not clicking well. Way more valuable than theoretical keyword research. For implementation, start a personal blog or website in a niche you understand and practice everything you learned. Our clients who hire content writers want to see actual examples of your work ranking in search results, not just certificates. Most important skills for SEO content writing jobs are understanding search intent, writing naturally while incorporating keywords, and basic on-page optimization like headers and meta descriptions. Technical SEO knowledge helps but companies usually have specialists for that. Build a portfolio showing content that actually ranks and drives traffic. Screenshot your Google Analytics data if possible. Employers care way more about results than courses completed. The HubSpot certification is decent but everyone has it now. Differentiate yourself by showing you can create content that both humans and search engines love.

Hi,
I am starting to work on my website's SEO and do not have a big budget and would love to use a free keyword research tool that helps me find long tail low competition keywords.
Any free recommendation or are there only paid services?

Keyword Tool Dominator is the closest thing I could find to a completely free tool

I'm a freelance copywriter working in some highly competitive industries. I had access to an SEMRush account, but that arrangement has finished and I'm hesitant to take on the full cost of the account myself (workflow can be a bit up-and-down at the moment).

I mostly use it for keyword research and competitor research.

What are your favourite tools? I've read all the comparisons with Ahrefs, Moz, etc. but I'm keen to hear personal experiences with these tools for this particularl purpose. TIA.

I know the most popular ones are Semrush and Ahrefs but they can be quite expensive.

I’m currently using Mangools for about $29/month but their daily keyword research limit is quite annoying.

Any suggestions?

I know there are free tools as well, but they’re quite limited.

So I am going to apologize early for this being a longer answer but here it goes anyways. I have started just yesterday a 3 step process for keyword research. It is all completely 100% free. Now please understand that this method seems to be interesting for me and I am going to be watching how my final content appears with GSC. Step #1: goto keywordsheeter.com (not an affiliate link) and type in your seed keyword. This tool basically scrapes Google Search bar and instantly comes back with hundreds of potential keywords to use. Step #2: goto google keyword planner. You will need to setup an Adwords account if you do not already have one. Once inside the keyword planner, copy and paste about 250 of the potential keywords from keyword sheeter. Make sure that you have United States selected before you search those keywords. From those results organize them in a way that the results will display to you the searches with a minimum of 100 monthly searches. Step #3: Goto ahrefs. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page where it says Free SEO tools and click on Check Keyword Difficulty. If you are running a new blog then you are going to want to get the results that come up with an Easy rating of 0 - 9. Step #4: Start creating your content for those keywords. The entire process takes around an hour to an hour and a half. The reason being is because ahrefs keyword difficulty gives you a rating for organic traffic volume. Where as keyword planner is all about ad placement volume. Again I have just started this process for my new content so I cannot give you any kind of results that I have personally seen. It just seems like a more fun way for me to do keyword research. I sincerely hope this helps you.
